At age 9 my brother who was 11 taught me to cultivate corn with a B Farmall. I am still fond of that exhaust lift that made it possible for a young guy to operate the cultivator. Some of our young neighbors had to lift the cultivator with hand levers which was a real struggle.

I was about 4 when Grandpa let me drive his 404 IH combine. I had to sit on his lap cause I couln't reach the pedals, but I steered and made the turns at the end of the rows cutting beans, Had to wear bandanas over nose because that combine was open cab, man the dust would fly! I later about 8 or9 I saw solo duty on a TD 6 buldozer clearing fence rows and on a 50s model case backhoe digging field tile ditches. About the same time they had me mowing with a ferguson to20 and a AC C. Grandpa had Dad start out real young on a H and M. Grandpa fitted the pedals with wood blocks so he could reach the pedals. He drove the M and feed wagon 30 miles one way 3 times a week to feed cattle. he said it took him 6 hours to do it including hand shoveling the feed.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT,AGE 3-1/2,STEERING OUR 300 U,WHILE MY UNCLE AND DAD LOADED THE HAY WAGON IN THE FIELD.THEY LET THE TRACTOR IDLE ALONG AS THEY WALKED ALONG SIDE,OCCASIONALY REACHING THE STEERING WHEEL TO 'HELP'ME STEER AROUND A BALE OF HAY.6 YEARS OLD,ON THE HIWAY PULLING A MANURE SPREADER WITH OUR 340 U,WHILE DAD FOLLOWED ON THE 300 AND LOADER.8 YEARS OLD, I RAN THE HAY CONDITIONER WHILE DAD MOWED AND AT 9 AND UP,ALMOST EVERYTHING UN SUPERVISED.MY YOUNGER BROTHERS CAN TELL SIMILAR AGE STORIES,THO I WAS AT THE YOUNGEST AGE TO START,AS MY UNCLE QUIT FARMING WITH MY DAD WHEN I WAS 6. WE ONCE ASKED DAD,HOW COULD HE TRUST US,LIKE THAT?HE SAID,HE COULD TELL WE RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO BE CAREFUL.WE DID NOT WORK ON FLAT LAND EITHER.WE ALL RODE ON DAD'S LAP AS SOON AS WE COULD WALK AND LEARNED HOW TO DRIVE IN THE SEAT,OBSERVING DAD AS HE DROVE.WE COULD BARELY REACH THE PEDALS,BUT DAD NEEDED US AND WE WANTED TO DRIVE TRACTORS!

Around 5 years old on the old John Deere Model M while the family stacked tobacco on the wagon. I just had to start, steer, and stop the tractor. Started and stopped via the starter button and kill switch.

My father taught me to drive a 1206 in 1966 or 67, was 5 or 6. Put her in low 2nd and stepped off the tractor, told me to "shove the throttle all the way to the left" if I got in trouble.

1206 is still my favorite.

age 8 and a mf 35. that was a fun little tractor. when I was twelve my dad started me on the case 480f backhoe and little kubota tractor on jobs. I wasnt any good with them for a few years, but i can seed with the 580M backhoe now whereas most guys on jobs cant hardly backfill worth a darn. He never let me run the trackloader though. He sold that when i was 14 or 15.

My dad remembers his dad putting him on a 10-20 IH (on steel)pulling a double disc. says he could hardly turn the steering wheel, wasn't shown how to shut it down so he had to drive it untill it ran out of fuel or someone came and got him. He thinks he might have been five or six at the time. Funny thing is at that time nobody thought it was dangerous? He also remembers watching the rad constantly boil. In 1939 they got one of the first ford 9ns and the IH dissapeared

Age 8. Farmall Cub. At age 10 was driving a Ford Dexta. Loved that Dexta. I could turn the wheel hard left, jam the left brake down with all my weight and with the tractor idling and pulling a full tobacco cart turn it into the cart row without the motor cutting off. That Dexta loved lugging along at idle.

At age 3 or 4 Dad sent me from the field to the barn on a 2N Ford. Fenced lane and through an open gate. Slow idle, low gear, turn the key off when I got there. Mom saw me coming and came running out to "help me". SHE ran it into the gate and wasn't very happy. The next time I drove it was the Super M and I was 10.

Started driving H some when I was about 8 and by the time I was 10 was putting in 12 hour days. Started driving horse and mule teams when I was 6. Last summer was at Amish farm buying strawberrys and couple of Amish boys that could not have been over 6 were driving team of huge Belgian horses pulling hay from wagons with hay fork, rope and pulley set up and 10 or 12 year old Amish girl was setting fork in hay so some kids still know how to work.

Got some pictures of the old man holdin me in diapers on a 2N. I guess I was about 8 first time solo. Massey Ferguson 65 diesel. I'll tell ya, that was one powerful tractor. Never drove nothin like it since. You couldn't have enough wheel weights on it, in fact there is a picture in the nebraska tests with a MF 65 with about 4 foot of wheel weights on each wheel. Doug

Cant remember how old but was probly around 10. First tractor was the Super A I restored. I remember having to rock it back and forth to unlock it and one time tried to hand crank it but some of the hands told me not to do it cause I might break my arm. No one told me about it having six volt either so I burned up a battery with a twelve volt charger. Father was not to happy about it but took it in stride.

I think I was about 9 or 10 when I started doing fieldwork by myself... Around age 12 or 13 I started taking the initiative to start projects, which resulted in some trouble from time to time.

Wish I would have known about ear protection back then and I wouldn't have to say "huh?" so much now...

Age 9. Dad had me drive the M home from the field. He had been binding grain. It had the binder clamp on the steering wheel. He put it in low, let it idle, and let me steer it all alone while he followed in our old jalopy (field car). Man I thought I was SOMEBODY!

I was 6 when i first drove a tractor by myself if ya wanted to call it a tractor as it was a Oliver OC 3 crawler as this is what my uncle farmed with back then all i had to do was keepp it between the tater rows while the men layed the irrigation pipe and had to count the rows and stick it in the correct rows for the next run. Lay a run come to the end of that two rows and count over to the next twenty rows and get it and the wagon lined up and creep along I was 8 when i was worken ground with it .

When I was eight, Dad started showing me how to shut the gas on and off and had me memorize the gear pattern to our old John Deere MT (still remember it, even though next year it will be thirty years since I've seen that tractor).

On MT the Power Lift controls live between the operator's legs. Dad had me push the clutch in every now and then while the tractor was off and securely parked. When I could fully depress the pedal all the way without hitting the control levers, the lessons began in earnest.

I soloed the next year at age eleven.

My daughter, who is seven and a half, can almost get the clutch all the way down on my Ford 2600...

I can vividly remember my first tractor "driving" experience. Dad had an H with a semi mounted mower all ready to go. He parked on a slope near the house and set the brakes. At age 5 I got on it to play, got the brake off and rolled the tractor backwards into the corner of the barn.
