has anyone put a staight pipe on a 310? My dad wants to put one on my 706 but i think its loud enough as is. besides i spend a lot more hours on that tractor than he does. I imagine it would sound great but id like to still hear it in a few years! any opinions?

What I don't understand is people's fascination with straight pipes. They look stupid.

I've always thought a nice oval muffler looked much better.

Yes, I have. It was a 310-powered 686. The tractor spent a lot of time idling, and the muffler tended to plug with that sticky unburned fuel those German diesels are known for. It had a sound all of it's own with that straightpipe, but it got old fast. Very loud.

The gentilmen below (except one) are on track. If you like the look, get one that can be surrounding a small diameter muffler. I have a deaf spot at 12000 Hz which is just the ringing noise of a straight pipe on an SH. JimN

Don't do it. I'm only 26 and have lost a fair amount of my hearing.

Factory mufflers (or a quieter one!) and ear protection at all times!

I wear ear plugs no matter what tractor I am on muffler or not...(And I am only 25)
A nice stainless straight pipe does look pretty sweet! If he is buying do it!

When young, I had a straight pipe on all of them-they all sounded great. Now, 40 years later, I put my head on the pillow and hear: A terrible ringing, A diesel refer engine constantly humming, and water running.

Put the factory muffler on it and wear ear protection. Otherwise when you are as old as I am you WILL be deaf, I speak from my experience from much quieter tractors than a 706. I started wearing ear plugs/ear muffs 30-40 years too late. To heck with the sound.
