Gentlemen, My son purchased a 1953 Farmall H tractor that has been converted to a 12v GM alternator (single wire) charging system. It is not charging, and maybe, it never did, we don't know. I am wondering if it is wired correctly? It could be also, that the alternator is bad. I did take the alternator to my local auto parts supplier for a alternator check, and they said they could not find a listing on it and therefore, they were unable to check it. Could anyone supply me with a wiring diagram so I could compare it with what I have? Thanks for your help, Karl in Silverwood, MI

How can a one wire alternator be wired wrong?
There is only one wire.

"How can a one wire alternator be wired wrong?"

Here's one way: Alternator output connected to the switched side of the ignition switch. Not only could the tractor not be shut off, but after about 30 seconds of running the insulation on the wire between the ammeter to ignition switch started smoking then burst into flames.

Punch below for a link to the exact diagram you need.

As for testing the alternator at the parts store, sounds like the guy there doesn't know much about it! For a one wire unit all they gotta do is mount it on the stand, connect the tester output lead and spin it up. If the alternator is good it'll show around 14.5 volts, and output amps somewhere in the neighborhood what's stamped on the alternator case. (One-wire alternators are usually stamped 42, 55 or 61 amps)
