I just installed new temp gauge on the SH. It won't come off the peg. Watr in filler neck is just warm enough to bathe in. New pressurized cap, and new rebuilt/recore radiator.I suspect a non-working thermostat, (open) or none at all. Can thermostas fail in the opn position? To verify without pulling the thing apart, can I drain off enough water from radiator, so the core is almost showing. Then fire up the tractor and watch for water coming in immediately? Would that mean water is coming from the block without being heated up? Or would it be coming from another source?

On mine I could tell with the radiator full. You should be able to see water circulating immediately if the thermostat is open or non-existant. Just leave the cap off and fire it up! I have had thermostats fail in the open mode - they actually make thermostats that specifically do that, I believe they are marketed as "fail safe."

FWIW my temp gauge on my H just barely comes up unless it is hot out and I've been working it a while. Goes higher since I put an oil cooler in front of the radiator, too.

OK, I'll waitr until I put up some hay next week and see what happens. I just happen to have the hood off and genny laying on the bench, getting new brushes and bushings. So thought maybe this was the time to pull the housing/outlet. Thanks
