is there any chance a 1086 that's poping out of hi range could be something simple like shifting fork problem or loose linkage.

Ah yes , it could be a broken roller a bad detent on the shifter cam or a woren shifter fork . This work has to be done thru the cab floor and i know you do not have the range cover removal tool but with a spare set of hands ya can do it . You also must remove the side cover on the left side of the rearend housing it is the plate with the clipped corneras that is where the rev. shift fork is and it will fall and make it imposible to put back on . Also ya must block UP the park locas it is HEAVY SPRING LOADED and will remove fingers . USe a 1/2 inch bolt head under the parkloc to hold it up . BEST TO GET A BOOK IF YA HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE>

Check out the linkage first, but most likely it needs the range trans cover removed to repair the detents. Guess I wouldn't call that a "simple" fix on an 86 series, but we can walk you through it.

This is good news. I was haveing nightmares about haveing to split the tractor which I wouldn't attempt but takeing the top cover off with a dozen pieces ready to fall into a black hole sounds challenging. The boy is replanting some beets today and wants to start spraying corn tomorrow. Maybe between spraying and swathing hay there will be a couple of days to peek under that cover.
