I just bought a 450 that has a miss on one cylinder. I replaced the plugs wires points condensor, cap and rotor. I also rebuilt the carb. It has 120-125lbs compression per cylinder. It is a steady miss and you can also hear a popping noise thu the air cleaner. I was thinking maybe a burned valve but I am not sure. Also what makes the tires on a narrow front wobble when going faster speeds?

Thanks for any replies.

Our 450 wheels wobbled badly. The round gear on the bolster shaft had the nut work loose, & the splines were worn badly. Replaced it with a good used gear, & it steers perfectly now. Worth a look.

Well myself i would start off with making sure that you have the correct plugs , next chek the gap on all the plugs to make sure that they are a .025 then move on to a set of points and cond. set at .020 then a new cap and rotor and then a new set of Copper core plug wires , next make sure that the dist is working correctly and that the centrifcal advance is working if that is not working then the dist needs to be worked on and that should be left to someone that knows what he is doing and has the equipment to test it . Next would be the timing and here again the dist must be working properly to make sure that it is advancing . Then we would be looking at the intake manifold for leaks and also checking the carb for propper adjustment . THEN It would be on to the valve adjustment. Oh and having a book to go by is a BIG PLUS.

The narrow front wobble is caused by worn out bushing/bearings in the bolster. Nothing more, nothing less.

Rusty, I put new bushings and bearings in two of mine and didn't help the wobble a bit. I then took off the front weights and it got better, then I remounted my wheels and it got better still. Now neither one of them wobble at all going down the road. I am sure the bushing and bearings helped, but did not cure all my problem.

Have you adjusted the valves? Try that. Maybe the timing is off a little. Sometimes new plugs are no good as well. The rims on your tractor are not mounted properly is the biggest reason for wobble. Run one wheel up on a 4x4 raising the other off the ground and turn a little then turn loose and the heavy side will be on the bottom. These can be a pain to get centered. It may take several adjustments to get them right. It also helps to balance the tires as best you can. There is also an easy steer wedge that can be added that will help some. I don't have one, but someone here on the board has a picture of one.

I would think a burnt intake valve is possible, but before replacing the valve take the valve cover off and check the valve stem, spring, rocker arm and pushrod. The valve spring could be broken or worn that when it is running it can't shut fast enough, or that the valve is just sticking a little. You can also check the valve clearance between the valve and the Rocker arm. If the valve seems to be sticking try a fresh oil change and add some Marvel Mystery oil to the crank case and run it for a while under load.

If all of that fails, then pull the head off and look for a burnt valve. Hope that helps.

A burnt valve would show low on compression. Try switching plugson 2 cylinders. If the miss follows the plug, you have a bad plug.
