Hello All.

So now that the weather is warm, and Im finally able to tinker with my M (purchased last December) without my hands freezing to it, I have also decided I want it to be able to do something useful. I would really like to pick up one of the mid-mount mowers that mounts on an M or an H, but I havent had any luck finding them. Well, at least not anywhere near me, and I dont really want to pay 1/2 the cost of the mower to ship it.

However, there are a few John Deere #5 mowers that I have seen for sale in my area. I know that originally they used some type of clamp on system to fit a JD tractor. Does anyone know how hard it is to rig something up to so this will fit my M? Has anyone here done such a thing? Or am I looking to spend a lot of cash for something that I shouldnt bother with?

(If I ever did get this thing, I would then need to figure out how to hook up those hydraulics of mine, but Im sure that will be another post)

Thanks in advance!

~Bug

My dad used a #5 mower on a M for many years. There is a flat draw bar mount for the mower that bolts right to the M draw bar. You might have to remove the swinging draw dar.

You will find the #5 fit up closer to the rear wheel of the M or H than a # 8 and was a far better mower for making nice square corners.

Did you get the pics of the no 31 mower I sent you? The hitch is basicly the same design.

I agree with Janicholson with the semi-mount. You can put "em in real tight places and put it wherever you want to after that. I restored an Oliver Model 82 semi-mount and aquired NOS original parts catalog and service manual. The oliver 82 could be run by a Super C...Oliver offered mounts down to a super C. The only problem with running the mower with my M is that even first gear seems too fast a ground speed for the mower to cut efficiently...so I use one of my H"s. Still looking for a Super C though. Randy, I would think something is wrong with your mower if first gear is to fast. My JD no 5 or any of my Farmall mowers will cut good in 3rd and 4th gear in some hay. I have never had to mow in 1st.

I to mow really thick grass with mine. You may have a timing issue. I don't know about an Oliver, but IH mowers can and have to be timed properly or they will not mow in higher gears and tend to break cycles.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that I mow very, VERY thick grass with an eight foot blade on the thing. I do have to watch it closely.

Wow...That's really cruisin'. I've got all new everything on the unit(just about)...sickle blade, bearings, spoons, I even sourced out an NOS crank wheel from Maibach Tractor. I didn't replace the guides (I hope I got that right)though. I suppose that could indeed be a limiting factor...any thoughts??? Randy

George, I totally agree. Something wrong with that mower.

To Clarkbug: The No. 5 was made from 1934-1957 so there should be a TON of them around yet. Many John Deere tractors also used the "flat drawbar" that would fit on Farmall M and H so it should be easy to find one. Check farm auctions. I bought a No. 5 that came off a "B" JD and had the flat drawbar. I bought another that had the "quik-tach" clamp arrangement. Made one good mower from two using the quik-tach system and scrapped most of the rest including the flat drawbar. sigh! $$$$ wasted although I got scrap metal price.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. Ill have to go take another look at the mower and see what it has for an attachment at this point, but I didnt see the flat bar that everyone was talking about. How difficult is it going to be to find one if it only has the quick-tach brackets?

Georgeky, you will probably have an e-mail from me shortly.

As mentioned many of these #5s were used with Hs and Ms, in fact JD supplied Mounts for most tractors. If you can find an operator's manuel for the #5 (in the old ones this was a parts book also) it would show the mounts for the M. I used a #8 with the quick tatch brackets you mention on my SMTA. I had a mounting bracket from a JD 420 or 430 and fastened it to my drawbar. You have to tailor the PTO length to match your tractor. As mentioned if you find one with the flat mount it will bold right to your swinging drawbar supports.

Yes a number 5 JD will work very well on an M. Make sure it has the flat drawbar that bolts directly to the drawbar of tractor. I used a no 5 for years on a M. They are good mowers. The clamp system you are talking about is for the old JD power trol hitch. It will not work on the M but can be changed to a flat mounting bar to fit the M. I will send you a picture of the set up you need if you will email me.

Though it is certainly argueable, I prefer a drawbar simimounted mower. Here is why:
They are more universal(easier to adapt to brands of tractor)
They are much easier to install and remove (10 minutes)
They allow a clean 90 degree turn (with a C,H,M or 300 size tractor) by wheel braking the tractor right wheel just at the exact corner of the swath being cut. while whipping the steering hard to the stop.

Ya,somethjng aint right if you have to mow in 1st.gear. We(not being too hard on equipment)used 2nd or 3rd gear depending on which tractor or mower. I would say we cut alfalfa at about 4.5 to 5 mph.
