I picked up a new seal...a thin little grean thing, but when I went to replace it, the old seal is a heavy steel piece that seems to suport the output shaft. Where does this little seal go? Do I press the steel foward? seems like that would hit the pto gears. Do I push the steel back? Then the pto would ride on a dry sleeve. I know this can't be this hard. Any ideas? Mike

The old seal was a double seal in a metal housing. I was thinking the same thing when I removed mine and it was a bear to remove. My parts man suggested putting in 2 of the new seals back-to-back which is what I did. Just check your PTO shaft to make sure there has not been a groove worn by the old seal so you don't place the new one in that exact spot.

BTDT. The seal does not support the shaft. Heavy bearings do that job.

Just remove the old seal and install the new one flush to the outside of where the old seal was.

After thinking about it. I think these used a leather seal in the housing. I assume you have the small housing unbolted from the tractor. Inside this(the metal thing you speak of I guess) There should be a groove for the leather seal to fit in. If there is none there it has came apart and is in the rear end housing or is just plain gone. This is a double seal. I have not had one apart in 15 years so my memory is fuzzy on it. Look at your piece to see if you see a groove in it.

The steel shaft is the whole length of the pto caqsting. I can find no normal seal, only the felt that is 1/2 way in the steel (aprox 2 inches in. The only way I can see to install the new seal is to slide this steel shaft either fowards or backwards in the pto casting. Mike

Some older seals were built in a metal case. You should take it out and put the new one in the same way. These new seals are a lot thinner than the old ones.
