I'm doing my first mechanical TA, on a 686. Got a couple questions- I got a complete rebuilt unit with a gasket kit. The kit included four seals. One is very large and obviously fits in the housing between the TA clutch and the planetary. Two are the same size and go at each end of the top PTO shaft. The fourth one is small, same size as the one that goes in the planetary, between the input shaft and the carrier. Why the extra seal, or am I not seeing something? When I install the new TA clutch disk and pressure plate, will the pressure plate levers require adjustment, if so, how? There is a straight roller bearing on the top transmission shaft right behind the TA. I have heard it is a good idea to wrap a rubber band around that bearing to avoid knocking the rollers out when reinstalling the clutch housing to the TA housing- is this true? What happens to the rubber band, does it just slide back and stay between the bearing and the gear? Last question, I removed the hyd pumps so I could powerwash the clutch housing. The dealer says there are two different thickness gaskets to go between the hyd pump mounting flange and the clutch housing. Says this contols the backlash between the pump gear and PTO shaft gear. Says the thick one is most commonly used. How do I tell for sure? I have an I&T book but it is quite vauge.

Owen forgot to tell ya to becareful on the big seal when installen the T/A assy. because you can roll that seal and damage it , there was a special tool for this but not many have that tool to protect the seal . You can use a dental pick to help ease it around the seal or you can make up a seal started out of super thin shim stock lube everything up good myself i use white grease and yes i have messed up a couple in my time . Thenmaken sure that ya get the big nut tight and locked here again the service tool is a hugh help but they are getting harder to find . a long drift punch will work in a pinch.

You are right about I should be more aware of problems that can occur if one does not have the proper tools. I got most of the IH special tools and repair manuals from auctions in the 80s when there were a lot of dealership sales. I tend to forget that most people will not have access to these special tools.

A new TA clutch pressure plate will come preadjusted. They should be assembled an a stand that will give more accurate adjustments than can be done while assembled on the tractor.

The rubber band will be pushed back off the rollers of the bearing when the clutch housing is attached to the rear frame. At some point you will find the remains in the filter housing.

If you do not know the thickness of the gasket you removed, just use the thicker one. Better to much gear lash than too little.
