Ok I have a 300 row crop. I am concerned about the oil pressure at idle. I have an old gauge without the number readings. so here is the situation... I can start the tractor in the morning and it will idle and run full power and the oil pressuer reads between the o and the l at both throttle settings. I will ge the tractor hot and the oil pressure will read straight up between the o and the l at full throttle. here is what is wierd. I will idle the tractor down and the pressure will drop to the left of the O right before the red part of the gauge. The tractor uses no oil and does not smoke. There is no knocking and it is almost hard to tell if the motor is running it is so quiet. I have pleanty of power and no leaks at all. I let it idle for 15 min today and nary a sound besides the exhaust note. should I be concerned? anything I should look for or should i just let it go and thank IH for making a good tractor!

I really don't think you have anything to worry about I have a 1963 farmall 806 and a 1965 farmall 504 that do the sane thing but yet i don't have any problems with them. Hope this helps.

Hi Jr,

After many years reading thru Motors manuals, I found a refference to oil pressure. They stated the typical engine only needs 7psi at 500rpm to 4000rpm and that's why mfg's do not state minimum required oil presssure.

My machine shop guy says that cam bearings are 90% of the oil pressure. I don't know as I never tried there therory.

Don't worry to much cuz oil pressure was an option on most IH engines and it seems only a few ordered the option, HAHA

As to the low oil pressure at idle when hot, that is normal as oil pressure, to a certain extent, depends on rpm. As to the higher pressure at idle when cold, that is because the oil is cold and thicker than when hot. However, I think you have a gauge problem, as both the idle and full throttle readings should be higher cold than when hot. Your Operator's manual likely shows the needle over the i as the correct postition. However, if the pump is not worn, and the engine is in good shape, all the tractors I have seen were further over to the right, past the l. With bearing wear, etc, it will gradually move to the left when under full load for a while. That is a 0-75 psi gauge.

The pressure will drop slightly with a load or with the variations in rpm like whem taking off in 4th or 5th gear.... I am now wondering if i have worn main bearings? I hate to think that because the thing has a ton of power and there is NO bottom end noise at all....

I forgot to add that the pressure comes back once the rpm's come up and are always dependant on rpm. while under load it stays at the same pressure but is lower because of the rpm...

If pressure reads about mid range at full throttle both cold and hot something is wrong with gauge.

I know alot of guys say 10lbs of pressure for every 1000 RPMS. Our H and Super both hold about 25- 30 lbas at idle. the Super though will get like 70 pounds wide open. The pump may be getting tired. The gears may have worn into the base plate of the pump and thus haveing a harder time holding presure. I beleive you can remove the plate and sand it back down to true. But like the post above says check the gauge first.
