To keep or to scrap - that's the question

Hi,

I'm one of those that usually just reads the forums for general knowledge and rarely posts, but I'd like your input on this: I have the iron scrap man delivering a trailer this weekend. Here's photos of some items I'm wondering might be better saved from the trailer and instead sold at scrap price to keep the history alive...

Please weigh-in with your opinion. Are there dealers for old machinery like this?

Thanks,
Eric

I'm near Ireton, Iowa -- about 45 minutes straight north of Sioux City or an hour SE of Sioux Falls, SD

I'll try get some better pictures this weekend and post some items in the for sale section on this site.

Thanks,
Eric

Scrap it and be done with it. I have a couple of 2PR pickers that I advertised, had several people interested but two years later they're still sitting here. I'm working on cutting them up as I have time, hoping to catch the high scrap price. Same way with tractors. Want them for next to nothing, I say no, so they steal parts off them.

that is a sad way to look at it. scrapping these old tractor outta be illegal, but its your stuff, do with it as you wish. One day when you're looking for that hard to find part, maybe you'll find it, maybe you wont, dont be surprised if its the latter.

Are you looking for tire kickers and more kickers or are you trying to clean up a place???
There is a lot to be said for just getting the job done.

I would put them up for sale because you can probably get more $ than if you srap it.

Its a shame you are so far from me. I am interested in that old corn picker and the cultivators. Send me a email and we can dicuss it. If it is or was red I am usually interested.

Been there, done that. I've filled up several 30 yard dumpsters full of scrap metal in the process of cleaning this old farm up.

Here's what I figure: I don't want to give anything to the scrap man that could potentially be worth more than its scrap value. I also don't want to get rid of anything that is rare or unique, becasue once its gone, its gone.

So, for all of the stuff I'm not sure whether or not it has any value besides scrap, I take the time to take some good photos and write up a good description, and put it on EBay with the starting bid as its scrap value.

If it sells, then at least I know the person who bought it isn't going to trun right around and scrap it, that they must be buying it to keep. And EBay ads are relatively cheap and pain-free.

I'd be interested in the manure spreader. Where are you located? I'm east of Sioux City.

Eric,
Where are you located? Might help if someone wants to look and/or buy some or all the items.

I"d hate to see it all go to scrap. There"s a good home for it somewhere.

every piece of that will sell on ebay...not a doubt. start it out cheap and let the market determine its end value. some guy is taking those planters apart and making one and two row units with them and they sell for what i consider big bucks.

If it was me I"d keep the cultivators and the manure spreader for sure. The spreader looks like a New Idea#17.We have one and it works great.Even if you don"t use it there is a good chance you could sell it pretty easy(at least around here). All you have to do is start pricing new ones to convince yourself a good used one is the way to go.(good used one is not so easy to find).Maybe keep the planter too if its all there.Course the wife thinks I have too much junk now.

Every item in the pictures appears saleable to the right person. An Ebay ad would more than likely bring in more than the scrap price, and then they would have a home. JimN
