L terminal on voltage regulator

Question for Bob M. or John T. (or other old-tractor electrical gurus) -- what's the intended use for the "L" terminal on my voltage regulator? (Original 6V, positive-ground system has been converted over to 12V negative-ground system using original generator with 12V battery and 12V voltage regulator.)

Looks to me as though this terminal would allow current to go to a load, probably lights, without going through the regulator's current-control relay; thus "L" for lights, I guess. But I'm certainly interested in other opinions.

Ditto on Bob's YUP I hear tell they (4 terminal VR's) are better at preventing overcharging and do a lil better job in general versus the 3 terminal. Why not feed those loads from the genny versus having to pass current through the cutout relay Eh?????
