Are the stepped head pistons from tisco the same idea as fire crater from I. h. will they give me higher compression as well?

yes,
The increase comes from taking up combustion chamber volume. Thus the bigger the volume of the "dome" on the piston the higher the compression. This is limited by the space available, its shape, the valve lift, and the angle (if any) of the valve in the head. Clearance (about .020") is needed to prevent valve piston contact. Measuring volume in a graduated beaker, to the top edge of the top of the ringland of the piston (where the piston begins to stick out of the block) will define the difference. JimN
