MikeCA,Chief,& other Navy folks. We just watched approx 700 new sailors graduate from the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes! Pretty neat ceremony. Thanks to all who offered advice. Andrew will be an Engineman so I will have expert help on my Super H when he gets home on leave.

Thanks all, Gene

SOme 40 years ago, I too, was braced up to a Marine Staff Sargent. My new chrome dome sparkling in the orange glow of the surise at Pensacola FL. Naval Aviation Officer school. He referred to us as "dick headed, puss gutted, ragged a--, college boy, pukes" and that was the good part! He did put a lot of discipline order in our 32 man platoon in very short order. The only retibution we got was when he brought his dog along on a 50 mile forced march, full packs and M1 rifles, and we ran that dog until it died! True story. SSgt Swanson just tossed it into the ditch and said, "I'll pich him up later".

Congratulations to Andrew (son? Grandson?) I well remember the beginning of my useful education at San Diego NRTC in the early 70"s. Sounds like our tax dollars are going towards the education of your tractor engineer. I can"t think of a better return on investment!

Gene, I'm glad he made it. It will get easier on him now. Maybe he won't think it's so much like prison anymore. I suspect he will look back on it and remember more good than bad, to this day I can picture my drill seargents and have the greatest respect for them. I wish him and you the best.

After 47 yrs, I too look back rather fondly at my drill sargeants. At the time, they scared the bejabbers out of me.
I recall the first night I arrived at Ft. Ord, CA; all of us civilians were lined up in the dark, scared as heck, and the company commander said "You guys can write home and tell momma to sell the outhouse, because your a** belongs to me". Later I realized this is how they turned out trained soldiers from the draftees (draft at that time) they had to deal with.
