Governer on Farmall B

Got my B running with little trouble, but the thing is running wide open. Looked at the governer and there is a lot of free play or slop in the lever which hooks up to the carb. The play is on the main shaft going into the governer which is causing the carb to open up even at idle. What is causing this? Wear in the shaft, or a weak spring. Have never been in a governer so any help would be appreciated. Where is best place to find parts?

Pull the gov housing off and be carefull not to move the gear as you can get it out of time. The input shaft can be rebuilt by machining the hole to 5/8 and pressing a brass bushing in.get a new gov spring and you will be set. Now to adjust linkage with engine off remove the clevis going to the carb. Open throttle all the way. Now hold the clevis linkage open and adjust the clevis pin goes in without moving the out-put lever on the gov and you will have good throttle response. If you need a rebuilt housing send an e-mail as i have some rebuilt and painted ready to go.

Do like gene says and put a bushing in that hole to get the play out of it, then go to a Case/IH dealer and get all new little bearings and springs inside the governor. Then set it up and adjust it like the service book describes and you will have one of the nicest running, smoothest governors IH ever put on a tractor.

I've done it, it's not hard to do. You'll be amazed at how nice it will work.

The governor shaft wear sure isn't good, but it still shouldn't overspeed. Try this, 'til you can thoroughly OH the governor:

Start by setting the length of the rod from the governor to the carb. Basically, the throttle butterfly shaft in the carb should reach it's wide-open position just a tiny bit before the governor arm reaches the end of it's travel.

This will put the carb butterfly and the governor back "in synch", so the governor cam control the engine, all the way down to idle.

(A weak spring will cause the governor not to "rev the engine up" when the throttle is moved ahead, NOT make it fail to idle. If the little ball thrust bearing is worn out in the governor, you will not get it to work by adjusting the throttle rod.)

Hi Bob,
I have a question for you. Farmall SC. On my throttle the springs are a miss match and the throttle when increased goes to hard. Is there a trick to setting this up properly? I have played with it and can't seem to get it where it belongs. It wont go to full throttle. Thanks any help much appreciated.
Bob

The spring opens the throttle. The flyweights close it. I would try a new spring in your case.

Hi Terry,
That explains it. So if the dowel pin (the bumper) that the flyweights shaft comes up against is worn, then the flyweights are coming in to far or fast? Thanks!
Bob
