Hey, just found this site this evening. Looks like some pretty knowledgeable Farmall guys here. I'm 35, a carpenter/cabinetmaker with a wife & three kids, living on an acreage in MN.
I've got a '54 Super M TA that I dearly love. I bought it from a friends neighbor five years ago. My FIL helped me get it up & running. I added a wide-front end and a loader and the local IH dealer painted it for me. Anyways, I was wondering what is available for really bright lights for it, like halogens or something. Haven't had much luck searching. This time of year, I use the old girl mostly for moving snow, and its usually after dark. Like to find something brighter, or maybe a different setup for the lights. It is 12 volt.
Also, noticed the brakes on it are getting weak. They often lock up, have to back up a bit to get them off. How bad of job is redoing the brakes?

Thanks!
Mike

I join the others in welcoming you to this site. I do not say much on this site, as I don't know much!
I note your handle. I live at Thief River Falls, MN 6 miles west of where the Arctic Cats are made. Where are you?

With a 12 volt system there are numerous choices for brighter lights. If you don't care about originality, you can put just about anything on the'ol gal.

Hi and welcome this is a great place fpr us tractor nuts. I am not sure about the lights they are available. They probably have them on this site look to the left under tractor parts. The trouble is likely the actuator balls that are inside the brake housings they can be removed and sanded to smooth them up. If you dont have a good service manual you need one, they are available here also look to left. These brakes work good when in good shape and kept fairly clean. You can find brake parts at your IH dealer or on ebay. I coudnt find them on this site but they may have them. Feel free to ask questions here someone will have a answer.

Welcome Mike,
I am a St. Cloud dweller. I will invite you to ask the Search For (archives) on the site for many many great discussions. One of the great things is the vast body of content stored there. Last week (or so) we discussed the need for renewing the brakes on disk equipped farmall Letter and early Number units. To rehash, clean the components, polish the ball groves and make sure they have no depressions in them from wear. If they do, sanding them out with a stone of the correct diameter, or a built up emery stick with paper wrapped around a slotted stick will make them nice (all 6 grooves need to be checked in each expander) The springs that pull it back to the released position (around the edge) can be replaced to assist release. The disk surfaces must be free of oil (check for leaks at the shaft) and the metal surfaces should be non directionally sanded to assist breakin. The disk thickness is specific, and I do not know it for a SMTA. Many light options will fit into the housings, but if brighter, they will burn out the dimming resistor in the original switch pronto. Use a different switch to control the brighter lights. Check the Watts to be sure of the draw it takes to light them, and make sure the switch can handle it. Use 12ga wire to the lights. Welcome again. JimN

Welcome to the board.

I have two Super M-TA's myself.
Brakes are not bad to work on, others will post on how to fix 'em.
