Bob,

You said to let you know how the three wire conversion went sooooo . I goter done and it worked just fine. Sure had to use a lot of heat shrink wrap and I used a little bigger wire than the 18ga that was suggested. I took the alt to the alternator shop and had them change the diode trio and the regulator, that was $20.

Now just got to touch up some nuts and bolts and it will be back in shape.

Thanks for all yall's help.

So, SuperA-Tx... what's your vote... (goofy) "one-wire" alternator, or "three-wire" alternator????

Bob,

Its just been a day and all I did was start it to make sure it ran and charged and then turned it off after about 10 minutes.

What I did notice was that with the one wire setup the needle on the Amp guage would always peg past the 20 mark and then drop some but never past about 18 or there bouts.

When I started it yesterday the needle on the guage didnt go over as far and it dropped back to about a 4 amp charge after a few minutes. I guess with the three wire it can tell when the battery needs charging where it couldnt with the one wire?

Main reason I wanted to use the three wire setup is that I just didnt like having to make sure every time that the motor was reved up to excite the alt. Even with a smaller pulley it just never did what I expected it to do. Im pretty picky with that Super A and want it perfect.

Anyway my conclusion is that the one wire setup would have probly worked but I see no reason why someone that is converting for the first time not just go ahead and do it right to begin with. The Alt comes already set up for the three wire and all you really need to do is run one more wire with either a idiot light or diode.

Bob: I expect he could have said, "Old Hugh MacKay" then everyone would have had reason for a good laugh.

I have a cousin in Guelph, exactly 10 years older than I. I hadn't heard from him in awhile. Finally one day an e mail, starting off, "Old age sucks," He went on to suggest the life cycle should be reversed, starting off dead, then retire as a teenager with lots of money, ending up in the womb. I wrote back the following, "At least I know your not at the starting gate".

Don't be flattered guys, remember it was the perspective of someone 5-6 months shy of 65.

Randy: Been there and done some of that The hair, no one was ever happier than I to see that disappear. Completely unnecessary, now if I could just get it to disappear on the other side of my head. My family tells me there is a way, but my voice will change. Oh well, I guess wiskers are worth it.

I've got plastic eyes since cateract surgery, got the teeth but don't wear them. To me those eyes were one of the most valuable items we were ever blessed with. Look after those, it's miracle what medical science have done with eyes. The damn teeth may have been a benefit, 50 years+ ago, however the way we prepare food today, Well, I have a neighbor wears his teeth all day and takes them out to eat and sleep. He claims it keeps his wife happy.

You can also change the regulator and have a 24V alternator. $15 for the last regulator I bought.

Oh whatta feeling huh?!!

JayWalt: Punch below for an outfit that sells kits to convert 12 volt Delco alternators to 6 volt pos or neg ground. (No endorsement here....just sharing info I've stumbled over while looking for other stuff!)
