I have a question about pulling power. Can anyone tell me how one of the new 40 hp 4X4 Compact Utility John Deeres compare in pulling power to a Farmall M? This might be a odd question but I was told that 4X4 is like having a 30% boost in pulling power over 2 wheel drive. Any information would be a big help. Thank you for your time.

I've got a Murray 14hp riding mower that would better compare to the JD 4x4!!!!! !
The Farmall is the way to go. In 20 years you will still be using the Farmall to tow broken-down JD's out back.
Just for fun I hooked my "Super A", Drawbar-to-Drawbar, to my brother-n-law's 4x4 Kubota and pulled it backwards all over. He is now looking for a Farmall!!

You know the H will pull any green tractor around, just because its an IH. HP, traction, and weight are not an issue here, because everyone knows an IH is better than a Deere, thats why case bought them.

I have a friend with a 955 John Deere compact 4X4. A nice tractor which I have driven many times. Well built, handy, a good tractor. But it is a compact, and you are asking to compare it to a real tractor. It wouldn't hold a candle, and I'm sure an H could drag it all the way around the yard. It's just too small to compare to a tractor like an M.

Once just for fun we chained a little 41 JD H to an old Jeep CJ. The little JD pulled the 4WD Jeep all over the place. I don't know what that JD H weighed but can't believe it was more than the Jeep. I'd put my money on the M. Besides you could buy a fleet of M's for what the 40HP 4 Wheel Drive thing will cost.

If the 4x4 weighs the same, then it will out do anything the M will do. However, M's are pretty heavy and are rather gutsy, so I don't know. HP is HP, traction is traction, but 2 more wheels turning is much better. Look at any large farm operation, the tillage tractor is a front assist or 4wd and the M is on an auger. But, the M is more fun. But, the new 4x4 will be more versitile with a 3 pt hitch, live PTO, power steering, the works. Personal preference.

A Farmall M, properly weighted, will drag that compact backwards anywhere you want to go. In a tractor of equal size and weight, the 4 X 4 would win.

I've heard that this is true, given equal horsepower. The 4WD reduces wheel slippage, and gives more effective pulling horsepower, particularly on wet or loose soil. The traction lock of the Deere, or any of the modern tractors, also helps maintain good footing. Given equal traction, though, drawbar horsepower is drawbar horsepower.

Of course, it's hard to beat an M, or H, or any Farmall for pure enjoyment. And the paint is the right color.

Seems like cost would be a huge factor, unless these Deeres are particularly cheap and Ms have gotten outrageously expensive.

For plowing snow, I find that weight helps out a lot, and lighter tractors (i.e. newer/smaller) don't stay in place as well against the force of the snow on the blade.

Unless you need power steering to use a loader, or do a lot of serious farm work, I think an M is the way to go - very cool, historic, and lots of power and traction. Cheaper to buy, too.
