I have a Farmall A with a 60" Woods belly mower that I use to mow a small apple orchard with. I only mow the orchard twice a year so the grass / hay is quite tall which seems to be a bit much for this tractor, especially if it's a hot day. The second problem is that you take quite a beating if you try to mow close to the trees. I was wandering if a sickle bar mower would be a better application for this type of mowing. I have never used one so I don't have a clue on how well they work The belly mower does do a good job of mulching especially if you make two passes. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've got a sickle bar mower on my A that I mow about 30 acres of hayfield, orchard and trails. I think the belly mount would be better in the orchard.I've been ready to get the "rope" you guys talked about a few times but thought it less drastic to start remembering where the rocks, wire, trees etc. were.

If you get a sickle mower for that tractor and try to mow in anything but a nice smooth consistent hay field, get a rope with it so you can hang youself from one of your trees. These mowers will frustrate you to death in anything but ideal conditions.

DJ,

The sickle bar mower will cut the high weeds much easier than your belly mower, using less power, and would reach under the branches easier to get close to the trees. However, I would think you would want the weeds mulched. The sickle bar will not do this. It only cuts the weed stalk once and the cut stalks lay flat on the ground and basicly shades the ground and would not rot nearly as quickly as the weeds cut by your belly mower. You might want to make two passes with your belly mower. Make the first pass with the mower up and then the second pass with the mower lowered to the final height you want.

Or mow twice as often.

The sickle bar mowers have some advantages, but an area where you might run into small tree branches is not one of them. If you have much of that, you could end up doing a lot of knife repair.

I've just bought a Farmall Cub which runs great and is great for lots of small chores. I want to mow with it but hoped to get some input from the experts on which way to go -- sickle bar or belly mower. The land is not flat, it's a gentle slope with some scotch broom and other weeds. Any suggestions on which implement is best to get for this use, and where to find a belly mower or sickle in Western Washington (Tacoma area). Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
