Years ago, I recall the "early" tractor's having number's (10-20's, etc.)then they went to letter series (A's, B's, C's, super C's, etc.)then they went to the much larger tractor's with number's. Are they eventualy going back to letter's again?

The first round of numbers were horsepower indications. The 10-20 was called that becuase it was rated at 10 HP for the drawbar and 20 HP for the belt pulley. Many of the early tractors for different companys went with this style of naming. Farmers knew what they were buying. When the letter series came out I guess IH wanted to be able to upgrade and improve the tractors without having to change the model designation to meet the new specs. The second round of numbers, 100, 200, 300, and 400, had nothing to do with the output of the tractor, it was just a model number. Like my Dodge Ram 2500. Guy Fay is definitely the expert in this area.

How about the current crop of red equipment. i.e. Case-IH MX270? STX440? etc.

That is an interesting point, and I bet it will be decided by some bureaucratic type public relations expert trying to justify his own existance. Large corperations today have almost as many bureaucratic experts as government.

If you check out the new tractors you will see that most have gone to some sort of letter and number combination. The CAT MT comes to mind, Ford and AGCO have been using a letter system to denote different lines. John
