I just got a 400 power steering unit and I want to put it on my 300. It seems to be simple enough to mechanically hook up, but the htdraulics are some thing else. The power steering unit appears to have a high presure and and a return. Getting the fuild back to the reserve does seem to hard, and finding a high pressure source isn't easy, but it can be done. Question I have is: Is it as simple as hooking up the high presure and returns. Is there anything I should whatch out for? Does the high Pressure need to regulated down? The gentleman that sold me the unit sent parts listing, and everything including the Kitchen Sink with the unit. I just down want to screw it up.

I will just add that I also know of quite a few people breaking that casting with power steering. My Dad has done that on an M, 400 and an H. Be sure not to get rough with it when the power steering unit is on there.

Gibby, if you are going to install a factory Behlen PS unit from a 400 to a 300, I believe you need to change the regulator on the hydra-touch unit to one with the flow-divider valve. The regulator is on the left side of the hydra-touch unit. You might need to get the PS regulator from the 400 as they would be the same for a 300. The high pressure hose from the Behlen unit connects to a port on the the flow divider regulator. The return line from the PS unit then goes into the drain plug on the hydraulic resorver. Hope this helps.

Now it's making sense what all these pieces are that the gentleman gave me when I purchased the PS unit. So it looks like I'm going to have to split my hydraulic control unit appart and add these pieces he gave me.

Gibby, I think you just need to change the regulator on the Hydra-touch unit. Let us know when you get it all working.

Gibby I looked at add on power setting on 400 when I was out at shed earlier. The high pressue line on this unit is piped directly into outlet on left rear of hydraulic block? (can't think of correct name) there is no sign of any pressue regulator. The return goes to T in drain in bottom of reservoir. Hope this is of some help. One other thing about add on power steering that I have never seen mentioned here. Back in 1950s and 1960s we had sveral Ms and 400s with power steering under one row cotton pickers. These units were mounted out over valve covers and braced to casting that supports front of gas tank. With the added weight of cotton picker they all broke this casting often.

I reread my post and might have been misleading about location of high pressure outlet. On this tractor there are 2 outlets turned straight down on far left side of hydraulic "block". The PS hose is piped to the rear one of these not the horizonal outlet on back side of block.

I've been thinking of doing the same to my 300 especially since I have a loader on it. I thought there should be a way to plumb into the hydraulic system but wasn't sure where. I thank you as well for your information.

Thanks for the heads up on the casting issue. I will have to take a serious look at building some additional supports to Prevent that. So the piping appears to be direct pressure, that sounds easy. Wish me luck.

Thanks
Dave
