working on a '51 M, read up on the 12 volt conversion , but not sure what number of belt to buy for the alternator, and , what about the alternator bracket, some guys weld onto the generator bracket so the alternator sits in front of original bracket because the alternator is shorter ?i've been lookin at this for over a year now and it's gathering dust... please help?

Bob and Dave, thank you for your input , I got an A34 belt and fits real nice flipped the original generator bracket upside down (prongs upward) and drilled the front hole to 3/8" a few flat washers later and it's very close to where it needs to be, now want to modify the bracket so the alternator will have a fork type saddle( weld a piece onto the front of this original bracket)Thanks, Doug

Doug - Alternator belt size will depend upon the design of the alternator bracket and the alternator pulley size. Suggest fabricating the bracket and mount the alternator. Swing the alternator on it's pivot so it is near the inside end of the belt adjustment range on the tension bracket. Next take an old "A" section v-belt at least 40" long and cut it apart. Now install the cut belt over the water pump and alternator pulleys, draw it tight and mark where the cut end overlaps on the belt. Carefully measure the distance between the cut end and the mark - this measurement will tell you what length belt you need.

For what it's worth the alternator belt on my Super M is an A33 ("A" section and 33" long)

The lenth of belt will depend on how you mount the alternator. I used the original generator bracket on my M. I can send you a pic of what I did. It's real snug, but the sheet metal fits over it fine...
