Confused, Super A Thermostat

Some folks have told me '53 Super A's did not come this way, but this is what I've got. It's the 113 CI engine and has a water pump but as far as I know, no thermostat. Are there 2 possible upper hose goosenecks available? One that houses a thermostat and one that does not? Can I change to a 'stat type? I'm familiar with some of the on-line tractor parts places. Which one might have the part?
Thanks,
David

Thanks to all for the information. I did not explain why I'm interested. The coolant never gets above lukewarm in the winter and the oil starts smelling like gas. I thought if it was a simple change I'd replace the goosneck to get a thermostat in it. On the other hand, it has run a long time without one.

Gene, Is the the part number on the one you'll sell a 257353 R2 ?

Again thanks to all for the info.
David

you dont need a thermostat run it the way you are now if you have to have one you can get one they will bolt on the same place but the hose size is larger but a clamp takes care of that if you need one i have one for 25 plus shipping

It didn't come from the factory but Super A's were sometimes done this way later. I have been told by one former IH mechanic that adding on a waterpump to the old thermosyphon system was a common thing, especially if the tractor was used hard doing lots of plowing and disking. According to him, you didn't have to add a thermostat, the pump just kept the water moving. I had my 1948 Super A overhauled this spring, and when I got it back the mechanic had added a water pump. The "gurgling" that any thermosyphon system will do after you shut down (Water continues to circulate until it cools off) had made him nervous, even after he completely went through the radiator. If you want a thermostat, you will have to find a different upper water outlet and a radiator, and you MIGHT have to alter the sheet metal--the pressure systems had taller radiators. (Basically you'd have a Super A-1 or 100 cooling system--the c-123 engines had pumps.)If I were you, I'd leave it alone. I was told by my IH mechanic friend that the motor won't run too cool, and chances are yours has been that way a while. I will say now that I've broken in my engine, I'll probably take the pump off and go back to regular thermosyphon this winter, because the pump interferes with the operation of the radiator shutter controls. (My tractor was a distillate/kerosene.)

I can tell you about a C, which I think would be the same. The part number for the upper neck with a thermostat/waterpump capability is 257353 R2. Without the water pump and thermostat, it is 25177 R1.

I believe (96% certain) all the water pump related changes can be put on while keeping the original radiator.
