I'm a "new" old tractor collector and know very liitle about them. I recently aquired a '39 F-14 and was wondering what the original seat looked like and how it was attatched to the frame... did the seat stem have the coil to cushion the ride? Someone in it's past bolted it to the frame/case just below the seat, along with a box/guard that looks like it was taken from the PTO... Did the PTO have some sort of cover on this model? The frame is now damaged where the seat was bolted.
...ANY input/info would be great! Also, how/where does one check the oil on these models!? (...Tractor has all steel wheels incase that makes any difference)THANKS!

Actually, Mike, the "post" seat does have a small coil spring in the bottom, but the effect is more psychological than physical ":^)

The oil is checked via the petcocks on the magneto side of the oil pan. If you get oil dripping out when you open the upper, you're full, and if you get oil dripping out the lower, you're okay. No oil out the lower is Not Good.

The two levels were important when the old girls ran on kero or distillate, which tends to dilute the oil. After a long day they'd drain oil until it quit coming out the lower petcock, then top it off with fresh oil to the top petcock.

BTW, the oil goes in the large winged cap just forward of the magneto, drains down throught the timing gears into the crankcase.

There were at least two types of seat supports, one with the hydraulics underneath and one without. The one without was nothing more than a bolt into the transmission cover. No cushion at all.

I have never seen a pto cover on this model.

I have some F-12 pictures on my website that might help you, but they were taken before digital cameras and were camcorder shots digitized into the computer. Pretty yech, but still useful.

Here is a picture of my F12 seat, over the hydraulics, and before restoration. Back up the url to the f12pics file and you can see a bunch more pictures.

Hope this helps.
