A friend bought a place that came with a 300 U. Supposedly runs but the hydraulic pump is missing. No p.s. has TA , fast hitch w/3pt adapter. Flimsy old loader ,not on the tractor, 2pt sicle mower. Think I can get it for 3or 400. It's about 150 miles from me. What would a hydraulic pump cost? Thanks in advance, Bruce

A friend of mine bought a 300u with a Shawnee brand front loader that has it's own hydraulic pump driven off the engine crankshaft. Apparently the tractor pump went bad at sometime in the past. The hudraulic lines were cut off and the loader's pump is used to supply pressure to the tractor systems as well. It uses the loader's hydraulic reserve as well as the tractor rearend. It looks pretty cobbled up but it works and the fast hitch works as well. I tried to talk him into getting parts from a salvage tractor to restore the lines and put a rebuilt or new pump on the tractor, but I think he is content with it like it is. I saw two junked 300 utilities sell at an auction- one had a rod out the side of the block but was complete. The other had no sheet metal but the engine block was good, many other parts missing as well- the two together brought $900. There were enough parts to make one good one. One of them had fenders as well.

My only consern would be how could it run if the pump is missing? On a 300U the distributer is driven off of/through the pump. No pump no distributer! Hopefully it's just that the pump dosen't work.

IT supposedly ran before the pump went bad. The distributor is in a box in the shed.

I'd go for it then, if all it needs is a pump then that would be a lot of tractor for the money.

The others have said it all, low price for a running tractor, saleable parts to defray expense, I can't see where you could go wrong. I'd do it, and I'm a letter series man!

I looked into the cost of a new hydraulic pump for mine about a year ago. Lowest price I found was about $550. I ended up being able to fix the problem with helicoils once I identified the problem. Definitely worth dragging home for $400, I would think. You won't want to run that thing with a loader and no power steering, though.

I don't know what the demand is in your area for 300 utilities, but I saw one go at auction in S.E. Pennsylvannia for about $2400 last month. It was straight but well worn. The loader and 2 point equipment and adapters were sold separatly. 3 or 400 would be cheap in my neck of the woods, if it runs.

If the engine runs reasonably well, and the tires are okay, you can't go wrong for that money.

I dont' think there's any such a thing as a "cheap" hydraulic pump. I'd be prepared to spend $400-$500, if I were you.

No P/S could be a problem if you plan to put the loader on it. Steering parts for the 300 tend to be spendy too. Big Fred has one, lives out your way, I'll give him a holler and see if he has anything to add.

3or 4 hundred dollars for a running tractor? What a deal. I had a 230 that was in pieces and missing many parts that I sold at a consignment auction for $600. As far as a hudraulic pump goes I don't know what it would run new but you could proably get a salvage tractor pump cheap. I would be hauling it and the equipment home if it was me.
