I have a 1948 W-6 with a 12 volt system. Alternator and magneto wiring needed to be replaced. While finishing OTHER projects, I lost track of where the wires "reconnected to".
Currently the engine turns over but won't start. When connecting a meter to the end of the mag I have less than 12 volts coming though the wire. When checking for a spark at end of plugs, I have nothing. Alternator wires are not connected at this time because I figured it would get in the way. I only have one wire coming off the side of the mag which is connected to my GRND on key switch..... IS THIS OKAY?? I was told by one person that a wire may need to be connected from ALT to MAG, but not sure where or how. What could be the problem?? ...AND WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO FIX IT.

If you have a Delco internally-regulated alternator, punch below....

Why is it that there is no silinoid listed in this drawing. With the drawing you provided, what stops the starter from constantly spinning? Appreciate your responce and awaiting more assistance.

The original W-6 starter circuit had no solenoid - instead there's a manual starter switch physically mounted directly on the starter. At least that's how the M tractor was originally wired - I presume the W-6 is the same.

Sometimes people replace the manual starter switch with a solenoid. If that's what you've got, post back and I'll send you a diagram for this setup.

Bob ....Yes, I have a solenoid on this tractor. I would appreciate the drawings that you offered.

Walt F.... I also have a magneto with a 12 volt NEG ground.

I would like to get back to the original stuff but right now the tractor is just needed for farm work. ( A quick fix) I am open for sugestions and thank you for your words of wisdom.

I emailed you a wiring diagram offline.

Note to Walt F - Ground polarity has nothing to do with the magneto (mag is electrically isolated from the charging system). Mags work fine on both positive and negative ground setups - the mag doesn't know the difference...

i've been lucky so far with electrical wiring. i have a friend who runs a auto-electric shop, who is also heavy into antique engines. i traded 2 old incomplete 3 hp fairbanks morse engines for him to completely rebuild the electrical system on a 1949 minneapolis moline za, using origional cloth pattern (reproduction) wire. we stayed with the origional 6 volt positive ground system. i asked "why positive ground"? he said, early tractors and cars had magnetos and for them to be compatible, the charging system had to be pos.grnd.
