C Oil Filter Troubles-Help Please

While changing the oil and filter on my C, the new filter came with a gasket and there did not seem to be any gasket under the metal shell when I took it off. I installed the gasket and it leaked, I took the gasket out and it leaked, I tightened the retaining screw just that last little bit and it broke.

Two questions:
1. Where can I get a replacement bolt. I am sure I am not the first person to be this dense.

2. What about the gasket? The groove on the base seems to be "v" shaped as though to contact both sides of the can. The gasket was square in profile. Is there a gasket here?

I presume I can get the broken screw out easily since it has a hole down the center. Any advice on this is also appreciated.

Thanks in advance- Dave

Thanks for all the responses. Especially the reminder that I have a salvage yard 5 miles away. Duh! Bought it for 10 bucks and when I cleaned the groove out the gasket fit almost like it was made for it.
Thanks again- This is a great web site.

I just picked up a box of C parts. So I have the metal cover and the bolt. If you would like the bolt, I would be willing to part with it.

If you can't find a bolt, I think a conversion to a spin on filter is available. You would still have to get the old gasket out to install the conversion.

As the others have said, that old gasket is still in there. I use a pick to dig them out of the H and M filter bases. You will discover a square groove once you get the old gasket out.

I had almost the same thing happen. Oil went everywhere. There was an old gasket still in mine like others have said. I would try a tractor salvage yard before buying a new one. I have bought many small parts like that around here and they most often just want a few bucks for the small stuff.

Just to cheer you on . . . The guys are right. I had very nearly the same experience. Even with an old gasket downin there(and it can LOOK like metal) you will see that V-taper you have. Get in there with something narrow like a small screwdriver (I'm thinking a chisel might score or chip something) and go to town digging it out. The bolt is going to be tough to find (you're not the first one to break one of these), but you might start with Glen Mlarnik at Little Red Tractor Co. He is great to deal with and has gotten me out of a couple of tough jams. Hope this helps.

My guess is you have an old gasket still in the groove. I've taken these off, and sometimes I find two of them crammed in there. The lower one being very brittle, and about 20 years old. Make sure you are down to bare metal at bottom of groove before installing new one
