I am going to set my valve clearance tommorow on my 50 C. I have a manual but was wondering if in your expertise you would have any advise. Should motor be warm or cold? It does not say. I have one freind who does his with the motor on at idle. Don't know if I'm up to that.Thanks for any help

Make sure your rocker arms are in good shape. I have an M so worn the valves have worn cups in the end of the rocker. A feeler gauge gives me too much gap. Until I can fix it I adjusted them until the push rod was tight and then backed off about 3/8 turn.

Adjust your valves with the engine warmed up totally. that means the oil temp warmed up also. It wouldn't hurt to go out and mow or plow for a half hour to be sure the oil is hot. It matters because the metal parts like the pushrods need to expand to the working length and then be set to the specs. just getting the water hot is not good enough, the oil has to be hot and stay hot for a while to warm up all the valve train parts. You can do it with the engine running but it is messy and also is hard on feeler gauges. I do mine when shut off and I don't waste any time to let things cool down.

adjust with engine off... and then give a "quick check" with it running with a minimum-clearance guage under each to make dern sure none are too tight. Best of both ways? ralph

Hi Paul - I have been working on my Super M for a while and just put new plugs, condenser, points etc. It had a constant miss that didn't seem to be ingition related. I am a complete novice at valve adjustment but i had a little help who showed me where to put the feeler gauge. We just did it with the engine off and cold. One valve had about half an inch clearance. Once we fired it up it ran smooth. Moral is that getting pretty close can be a big help. I was surprised such a simple adjustment made that big an impact. Hi Paul - Best to set the valves with the motor fully warmed up. I do it with the motor stopped: Turn the crank so #1 is on TDC firing (both valves closed) and adjust the #1 valves. Now turn the crank exactly 1/2 revolution and set #3 valves. Another 1/2 turn and do #4, and finally one more 1/2 turn and do #2.

My father in law on the other hand sets his with the motor at idle. It works fine, but I'm not real fond of working that close to a hot manifold, spinning fan blade, moving generator belt, etc. (Still got all my fingers and would like to keep it that way!) ...Bob M
