Alright...I've had it up to my ear lobes. I am hoppin' mad. My pesky good-for-nothing thieving neighbors are probably at my house helping themselves to my hard earned belongings as I sit and type this. They've taken gas from my truck half a dozen times, emptied my H a couple a times, stolen chickens, and...now they have broken a windown in my garage and stolen a battery right outta my car! Sherrif says, not much you can do...gotta catch 'em doing it. So far I've installed a security light. Looking for ideas. I want to 'thief-proof' my h, too. Not that I think they are smart enough to start it, but who knows. I need some help.

Lots of wild and good ideas here, luckly I've never had that problem. In one neighborhood I lived in we had a couple of kids getting gas out of everyone's car, until a old guy saw them under his carport sucking on a hose. The next thing this kid knew the old guy had his service .45 wedged against his head, while his wife called police. The kids were charged and never had a problem outta them sense. I also knew a fellow who owned a gun shop near his house which was out in the country. He could not afford the insurance and didn't like dogs, so he had two 5 foot diamond back rattlesnakes that he would release in the shop about three times a week. Funny thing was he could handle the snakes with no problem, but once, his wife (unaware the snakes were lose) went to the back door and as soon as she turned the knob she could hear the rattles. I don't care for rattlesnakes either, but he never had a breakin.

I was going to suggest a sign "Guard SNAKES On Duty" would keep most people out too. Junkyard close to where I grew up had a pair of Black Bears. You never knew when They were out of their cages either. You ALWAYS went into the shop FIRST to see if the bears were locked up.

As much as you want to get these guys, don't do something stupid. Guns, mean dogs, electric fences, spiked boards, bombs - even those designed to make noise, could hurt someone. Then you'll be in trouble, if not with the law for setting booby traps, then in civil court, where their family sues you for loss of whatever due to what you did to their relatives. First lock everything down - that means they're "breaking and entering". Then go for security devices, cameras, alarms, etc. - well hidden, you don't want them stolen too. Alarms can be very simple, strings across doors that trip a switch that sets off lights or a noisemaker, can be very simple. If you want to leave something in your fuel tank, diesel or kerosene will do fine. Don't put anything like sugar in your own equipment! Only stuff that will do you no damage, and you can clear out easily! Father in law had fuel supplier put diesel in tank where he had been loosing gasoline - next morning there was a car about a quarter mile down the road - stalled. Had his culprits! You gotta be careful to play by the rules - courts today are making criminals out of the victims way too often.

If You've got 110V power to the garage, run an electric fence around the stuff You want to protect. Someone breaks in and touches the fence they may not come back! Pulling the distributor rotor out of the tractor or the coil wire is enough to disable it. Just leaves a dead battery if They try to start it. You don't really want to hurt the culprits, just make it so they never want to come back. A few $$$ worth of padlocks and fence panels over the windows will make it hard enough for them to look elsewhere.

If your garage and house are close together, take a motion detector unit and screw in an adapter for an extension cord, run that into your house, then get ready, I done this and they( bad guys) are more startled than you are , have help to call the fuzz while you "entertain" them

A friend of mine had trouble with thieves in his tool shed. He use a mixture of oxygen and acetalene in a old 2 gal oil can that was set off
with some heater wire out of an old toaster and a 12 volt battery with a switch riged to the door. Its only a concusion device but it can be heard for a mile and if you are in a metal building with it your ears will ring for a day or two that was the end of his problem.

There are lots of BAD ideas here. Didn't September 11th teach us anything? Here in Missouri we know this: that you never, ever, get yourself into a p...ing contest with a skunk! Security, locks and chains, cameras, evidence enough for a legal prosecution, that's the only way to go. If you target your neighbors and try to get even, they'll just up the stakes and somebody's gone to get hurt, big time. Be careful. Good luck. RedTed/MO.

Hi Jeff, don't let them make you do something stupid and end up in court, they win if that happens. i'm with Alabama, try x10.com they have so many electronic gizmo's thats it kinda daunting to figure out what to get to do what. but they have remote wired and wireless cameras, they have motion dectectors, they have vcr controlers that will turn on the vcr recorder if a motion is detected, they even have a barking dog system that sounds like the hound from hewl. i set up a camera and a vcr with a radio shack 6 hour tape years ago. its a pain to fast forward through 6 hours of tape. but after doing it for a week, i found out some interesting things were going on around the farm when my wife and i were at work. with the vcr controler x10.com has its alot easer now. doesn't cost much either. i like the spiked fuel idea though. would you please post back with info. i think a lot of us are having trouble with stealing/vandilism/trespassing.

You have several suggestions here but at least one of them won't work. Sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline so the worst it can do is plug the filter (or screen) in the tank. Most likely it won't do anything except lay in the bottom of the tank. The water idea seems like a better one to me.

There's a lot of good ideas here. I personally like the idea of a gas can with gas & sugar in it; aside from that, I like the security camera idea. Tie it into a VCR, put up a motion-sensitive light to illuminate the area when they show up, and you're in business. The sugar-in-the-gas idea is the cheapest, though. :-)

There is nothing worse and frustrating than stupid, inconsiderate people. I'm sure we would all like nothing more than to shoot the SOB, or cause bodily damage, however the fact of the matter is the law seems to be more interested in protecting these idiots rights than the victem. Personaly, I like the idea of disel fuel, or water/gas mixture. The motion detected camera is another great idea, and you can always use the camera in other aspects of your life ( such a a amature filming of copps when the police make there visit ). But whatever you do, remember that stupid people will probably want revenge, and the cost of fuel is not replacement for some somewhat security you currently have. There is no point in risking your health worring about stupid people who don't.

Just my two cents.
P.S

a secondary kill switch under the hood would be cheap insurance.

I like the ones about using suger or sand in the gas because it will screw up whatever they put it in, and they can't say nothing about it. You have to be cool though don't let them know you think they are the ones steeling from you. They will never have a clue until its too late. You have to remember if they are steeling from you this much they won't stop and they arn't real smart.

Get some 2x4's with nails sticking up threw them. That would feal real good going up threw the foot in the middle of the night!! You could barry the boards so all you see is the nails. Place them around the Farmall. If your driveway is gravel you can hide the boards good to protect your truck.Just don't forget about it.

Many good idea's but, my Great Grand Father had the idea of using pepper in his old double barell shotgun. He used to catch "kids" in the garden, if they were in school the next day they didn't sit down at all. One idea is to put a loud bell, cans, etc. on a string attached to gas cans, etc. This way when they go to move things around they will be hearing things that might stop them. If you catch them in the act, use a Polaroid camera, (cheaper than a video camera) and the Police just love pictures!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!!

Someone stole my riding lawnmower a couple of weeks ago, right out of my carport. I am retired and usually home, so someone must have planned it well. I installed a security light, and now I chain everything together....lawnmower chained to the Farmall, etc. A dog would be a good idea....they can't run loose here, but a dog could run in the carport. I'll have to think about that.

Good luck..

Maybe you could "bait" them similar to what Chris said. Leave a jug of "gas" in plain site with a little something special in it. (water, sugar, sand, or whatever). Also you could hook up a motion detector to something very loud. I doubt they would hang around with a lot of noise. I like the dog idea as well.

If they're still taking gas from your H, maybe you have some fun with them. A while back a fellow posted that some kids where stealing gas from his tractor and putting into their jeep. So, he drained all the gas out of his tractor and replaced it with kerosene (maybe diesel would make gasser run even worse.) Cops found the jeep dead on the roadside and the fellow got all his kerosene back. Chances are your idiot neighbors wouldn't notice the switch.

LOL. That's pretty funny Chris. I just thought of something else. Maybe put some sugar in the gas tank of the H and just remember not to run the H tell all the gas gets stollen and then clean out the gas tank, lines, and carb while you are laughing at the punks. I ounce heard of a guy that drilled a hole into a stick of wood and added a stick of dinamite in there and placed the stick of wood into his wood pile when some people started stealing the wood. I would hate to think of the lawsuite that would come back on you for something like that. If you could think of something where there really couldn't be a lawsuite, there is nothing like pulling a prank on someone like that.

Have you ever thought of one of those hidden camera's? That might be the way to go. Get them on tape. If you are not there all the time and they know that, your security light isn't going to help much. They will soon know that it comes on even when you are gone. It may add some lighting for the hidden camera though, so it might work good in conjunction with that. I wouldn't put up with that for a minute. What neighborhood do you live in anyway? Maybe it is just one batch of neighbors but if I lived in a neighborhood full of those kind of people I would consider moveing.
