Cub has a 'klunk'

I have a 1950 Cub with a belly mower. When mowing in 1st gear there is a consistent 'klunking' sound in the left rear wheel. I put it in high gear the other day and the left rear 'klunked', seized momentarily, and then started to turn again. Of course I don't want to use it anymore until I can get it fixed. Any ideas on what could be causing this and is it something a novice mechanic can fix, or is it better left to a professional? Thanks for your help

Jack it up and push the wheel side to side to see if it is a bearing in there. I have had some do something similar and it was the bearings.

Had the same puzzle with my '41 M - turned out it was the wheel weight that was loose and making the noise.

"Kind" of sounds like the left rear wheel bolts are loose.

Don, I had the same problem with mine. It turned out to be the pinion gear that drives the bull gear in the final drive. It had a tooth missing. It wasn't really missing, it was in the bottom of the bull gear pan. I just replaced the pinion gear/shaft and all was well. When I talked to the guy at the bone yard I found out that this was not unusual. Good luck.

Well the final drives have a pan in the bottom. Why dont you remove it and jack up that wheel? If you spin the wheel you should be able to see something making the noise. Good Luck Bob
