I am looking at buying an H farmall that looks to be a good tractor except the hydraulic pump leaks quite a bit.

What do you think it will cost to go through that pump? And how much is an H farmall worth these days in SD. It has good matching tires and the tin is straight and it runs nice except for that pump leaking.

Peter:
I bought a 1950 Farmall H a few months ago in Iowa for $800. It was in great shape, good tires, tin straight, converted to 12 volts and it came with a trip bucket loader. I would not trade it for anything right now. Price depends on how bad you want or need it. I talked the guy down from $1000 after I drove it and found out 5th gear jumped out when driving it down the road. Which is common after years of abuse. Good luck...

Peter the two primary areas of leaking on the liftall are the countershaft seal and the reservoir gasket. For now I would recommend you remove the counter driveshaft, from the transmission to the liftall, until you have time to remove it if you end out buying it.

To remove the countershaft, remove the lower inspection plate. Pull out the two large cotter pins and slide the collars towards the center of the countershaft. The shaft will then come out.

Hey Red whats the purpose of removing the shaft?
Is it just so you don't run the pump on low oil???? Just wondering because my pump leaks too

Yep you could run that out of oil and do damage to the pump.
