The tractor was running fine. I have brought
the starter in, got that rebuilt. Replaced
the wiring with new. Have a full charge
on the battery, and when I turn the key
on and push the button, it just makes this
clicking sound from the selnoid. So I took
the battery off and moved it to my Super A,
the Super A started right up. I put all new
plugs, coil, replaced coil wire, distruitor,
What else can there be? I'm really stumped
on this one? Any ideas to get that old girl
running again??

Thanks, Big M

The clicking sound at the solenoid suggests that you have a poor electrical connection. Before you go ripping & tearing things apart, check all electrical connections. The one most overlooked is the ground cable where it connects to ground. Disconnect and clean both cables at both ends. Look for signs of heat at both cable ends. (melted insulation etc.) Cables do fail. Especially if they are old. The solenoid is another possible source of the problem.

This happened on my Super A,it turned out that
the fan hub bearing went bad,I loosened the belt
and it cranked over normal.

I had this same problem with my 41 M. Rebuilt the starter and the starter switch, charged the battery, etc. Turns out the ground cable was loose in it's connector to the tractor. The little sparks coming out of it gave it away. Always start with the most simple things first!

Remove cable from starter and try starting with hot battery and a good set of jumper cables. This should show if starter is the problem.

better check the bendix if it starts one tractor it should start another UNLESS your ring gear is bad that can bind up a bendix real easy take the starter oun and turn engine over and look a all the teeth in the ring gear might just need a good bendix this is why i get a rebuilt one for 83 exchange get guarantee new bendix saves lots of problems hard to find a good shop that even knows how to test one those old timers have retired new guys dont have a grouwler to test the arm nor a lite to test the fields better off with rebuilt saves a lot of running around

Before you do anything else, try this: Grab the fan blade and try to turn the motor BACKWARD a fraction of a turn. Or put the tractor in high gear then push it backward an inch or two - enough to cause the fan blade to move a bit. Then try to start it using the starter. If the starter now works, the starter drive (bendix) was jammed.

This happens sometimes when the bendix wears out - means the bendix should be replaced.

make sure that all wiring connections are tight and not corroded, then make sure that the engine is free, my little nissan truck would be running one day, the next i heard the "click", and found the engine to be stuck. if it isn't any wiring connections, take off and clean the solenoid, because this may also be the problem. my friend had to replace the solenoid in his massey-ferguson, it was runing for an hour, then he shut it off to take a lunch break, an hour later it would just "click". thats all i can say about it, really, hope it helps.

Will the starter spin over on the bench? I'm thinking perhaps when the starter rebuilder put the starter back together, perhaps something was grounding out. Happened to me. I'd recheck the starter, maybe your guy put in a faulty starter drive....
