I have acquired a basket case Farmall. I got the head off last night. Do I have to get a sleeve puller to remove the sleeves, or can they be pounded out from the bottom side. Any help is appreciated. Many Thanks!

You can break them out with a straight screw driver. Not too hard to do once you get them started. Flush the block out with lots of diesel and blow out all cavities.

MJ thanks for the advice. That is my weekend project since we are in for rain. I am planning on flushing the block out. It has had non-detergent oil all its life and it very gunky inside.

Been there, done that. Non detergent oil is a great discussion topic in itself. My "H" had non detergent oil used in it from 1950 until 1993 when I could no longer buy it. I tore the tractor down in 1980; it was clean so I guess it was changed regular. It was an Esso Mineralube product straight #30 with anti scuff properties. Any way, I had to switch to a different Esso oil with some detergent properties. The dealer said a lot of truckers use it. It's worked well for me. If you clean the whole engine up and switch to detergent oil you'll be fine!

My 46H at the farm was non-detergent until I bought it in 1990. I switched it to detergent oil right away. For the next 250 hours, I was going through oil filters quickly until it cleared itself out.

I also have an overhauled 1938 F-20 which the overhauler didn't take the time to clean out. That one is eating up oil filters right now.

John, you won't pound them out. Your best bet is to get a puller for this job. I've done a few and the local IH shop has always been willing to allow me to borrow their puller. Maybe you can get that lucky.

Curt, thank you for the info. Here is a shot of the pistons in the block. You can wiggle #2 and #3 real easy. They were obviously the worst of the 4.

Holy crud, Batman! That's a mess!
Good luck with this one, but it does look like
there was oil in it at least.
One of my neighbors built his own sleeve puller
with some discs cut from steel plate and a piece
of allthread. The discs are just big enough to
cover the bottom of the sleeve. Then apply a four
pound hammer to the end of the allthread.

Only thing I ever noticed is grey paint(babbitt?) in the bottom of the oil filter housing. Always wondered what that small screw in the oil filter base was for. Now I know... you can wash that old crud out of there.
