This is the M that our UPS guy tipped me on just west of Indianapolis near Raceway Park. Corey and I went over this afternoon to look at it. It ran 5 years ago. Engine is stuck, it is rough and 3 tires hold air. If I can drag it home at no cost I might give this one a chance. It's an easy $3,000 project from my estimation.

Ha red if you want to borrow a tow bar that mounts to the front. Let me know it is a lot easier than using a truck and chain.

Red, I would get that thing in a heartbeat. But I am biased, the M is my favorite model. At our show here in West Michigan today, some fella wanted 1500 for an M that looked like the one you are looking at but it ran (and leaked). Of course, show prices tend to be inflated. Someone was asking 10,000 for a 1946? MV. Egad! -BTD

Nobody else around the area knows about this one. The owner of the property has to check with his mom before letting me have it. It might be a dead deal. Mrs. Red doesn't want another yard ornament if it isn't going to run. I would like to have that engine loose before bringing it home.

I went over and pulled the spark plugs. None showed rust. I shot in a bunch of PB Blaster in each cylinder. #1 and #4 are near their top stroke. #2 and #3 near the bottom from the hollow sound of shooting the PB Blaster. Plugs show that it does burn oil and it was running too rich. It had Champion D15Ys. Serial number on both the frame and engine are 134772 which makes it a mid 1947. The drawbar hole has virtually no oblong wear.

The owner of the property showed up and we had a pleasant chat. His dad bought it at a sale in 1968 or 1969. They used it for light work until 1995. I did open the bottom petcock and fairly clean oil poured out! He did say it never ran very well, especially at idle. I have a feeling that with a carburetor rebuild and fresh ignition system, it should run fine once it is unstuck. I briefly looked at the manifold and didn't see any holes.

He said he would call me during the week to see if I want to pursue the project or not. If I can get it for next to nothing, I think I will take a shot at it. I'll have to remove a rim and the good tire from Old Rusty H and mount it on the M before I drag it home with the truck and log chain. It would be less than a 4 mile trip.

The electrical had been changed somewhere along the line. The voltage regulator was mounted on the rear gas tank support. Everything in the light box is shot. Headlights are still intact with good glass!

Red, My boy drives for Fedex and he's all over the place. Almost every time he stops by (3 or 4 times a week) he tells me about farmall he has seen in a back fields or behind a barn. I bought two M's that way. Got a fantastic deal on both of them. My wife is catching on. New furniture time. The best of Luck to you on this M. Please keep us posted.

Bart tell me about new furniture. I let Mrs. Red loose in the Lazy Boy furniture store. She didn't walk out of that store until she unloaded $3,600 of my tractor fund money. :(

Thanks for all the comments! Sheriff's car was already there. He musta heard I was coming over.....

The plus side on this one versus Old Rusty H is that the engine is still intact and not opened up exposed to the elements. I'll check the oil pan for oil today while I give it a careful lookover. Corey and I had to leave because thunderstorms were rolling in yesterday. I forgot to check the serial number while I was there. I will also check the drawbar for wear. This farm has not seen row crop production for years. They rent their ground to the RVs for the Raceway Park events. I'm sure that is far more profitable on this hilly farm.

Red,

Looks like the trany is in good shape, I don’t see any oil leaks around the axle housing. As far as the engine goes, you may wind up like old rusty. Now if is an old 400, I would be there to pick it up. They are a little bit more tractor than a M, and I wouldn’t be hesitate to rebuild the engine and restore it

Doesn't look too bad, Red...one I looked at today was similar, though it sounded good running. Even though I am new to all this, I might even take a shot at one like that under those circumstances. Maybe BECAUSE I am new, I would....who knows??

Good luck!!

The Red: Those rear tires look to be the older shallow lugged type. If so, they do not appear to have much wear so maybe the internals of that tractor are not as worn out as the rusty paint might first indicate. Check wear on other small details like side to side slop on foot pedals. Throttle wear etc.. Just wondering. ralph

Red, Thank goodness for observant UPS guys! It looks like Corey is sold on it. And Mrs Red? :) I'm sure it'll be a good project for you if you decide to give it a home. Hopefully a little easier than Old Rusty H! Sometime when I'm in your neighborhood I'd like to stop in and just say "Hi" if it were OK with you. I don't get to Indy very often but I'm sure I could make it over there sometime. I'm halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio. Good luck with it and keep us posted on what you decide to do with it! And if you don't want it, who knows, maybe I'd be intrested. Pending approval of Mrs Mark of course! :)

Red, You'd better get it....it has the safety style gas cap already on it! Heck, you may just have any easier time getting this one "Unstuck". Agreed, free for the hauling, but be careful out there...looks like you might have speeded going to look at this one...the Cops followed you in! :)

Bob if I can drag it home at no cost, then I will do it. I won't pay anything on this one. Suprisingly it doesn't have a flat belt pulley assembly!
