I would like to identify a tractor my father-in-law bought from his family's estate. It was probably purchased new by the ranch in the 60's?. It is a IH Farmall with 6 cyl turbo diesel. Fenders are 'square' with two headlights each. Manual transmission shifts in 'linear' movement with H/L/N/R on one lever and 1/2/3/4 on the other, levers are to right of steering wheel. Has 3 point hitch and wide front end. This is a large tractor (by my Ford experience) where the seat is above my eye level when standing on the ground. I would like to find a good source of manuals
for operating and maintaining this tractor.

Thanks,

Scott

What is the pattern on the HLNR lever? If it's a straight line, then it has to be an 06 series, if it's an H pattern with H and L above and R below, then it's a 56 or 66 series.

The pto shaft(s) if it has one coming out the back then it is a 1206, if it has two then it might be a 806 or 706, the 856 and the 1256 were made in the late 60's, the 1066, 1466 etc did not come out till the 70's, look under the fuel tank on the clutch housing for the s/n plate it should tell you wot model it is.

If itis a turbo, has a white grille casting and white fenders with in line H,L,N&R, then it is the mighty 1206. I bought one of those used in 1974. Mine was a 1967 model. One of the best tractors I ever had. Strong on horsepower, too. Traded it for a new 1566 in 1976. Wish I still had that 1206.

Turbo kits were made for both the 706 and 806 diesels. Only the 1206 came that way factory, and not all aftermarket kits were well desined, or thought out.

My best gess is a model 1206 First IH tractor over 100hp. The shifting arangement is the best lead to id it .Also the 6 cyl. turbo ,a 1206 was the first to have this set up

It could be an 806 with a aftermarket turbo add on. If the serial tag is still on the frame by the clutch housing on the left side. Just were you climp up onto the tractor. It will say the model number and ser #. Good luck

Only time will tell from the description.. but the "eye level" seat thing popped a 1466 into my mind first. Seems some of the others mentioned are shorter, such as the 806, etc...

You must be taller than me. I'm just a short little fellow. When i first drove tractor that big I had to slide my butt off the seat to reach the clutch or brakes pedals. And i'm not that much taller now. It could be in the 66 family but they are a more resent series also if the shifting is not in a row from R N L H like the 06's.

Thank have a good day
