Can I just change the regulator and still keep my 6v generator on my Super A if I convert everything else to 12 volt. Though I have read in the past that it will not damage the generator.

My (gasp) JD B has a 6v generator with a 12 v regulator on it, and it works just fine. My Farmall 240 has the same setup, and works fine also.

...so if a 6 volt generator can put out 14 volts, why have so many people gone through the trouble of replacing them with an alternator? Kind of makes you wonder why you can't get somethin' for nuttin'..... ..

Afraid not. You will have to get the generator rebuilt for 12 volts. A rebuild with a new regulator should run around $125-150.

Red, the rebuild shop down the road does not agree with you on this one. He hooked up the one off of my H and it charged 14V. He claims a regulator change will do it. I don't know for sure but he has been in the business as long as I can remember.

Someone else (I think it was Les Repair) said the same thing about changing the regulator a while ago. He explained that the generator produces a certain number of watts, you can have more volts and less amps, or vice verse depending on the regulator.
