I just purchased an M, serial # 51241 which I assume is a 1942. My tractor does not have the light bar mounted near the steering column. Instead, it has fenders with forward mounted lights. Is this original? The tractor also has an older looking 3pt hitch system controlled by a pto belt driven hydraulic pump and tank mounted left of the seat. Are the electrical systems on these positive ground? This is my 2nd tractor, replacing a 45' Allis C I sold earlier this year.

Mark congratulations on the M purchase. Originally they were positive ground but you can ground as you desire. The light bar was original on these. The fender lights actually make more sense because the nose of the tractor doesn't impede the light as much. The PTO driven hydraulic system is an aftermarket along with the 3 point hitch. Sounds like that farmer adpated that M as needed! You have an early 1942. Some of the casting dates might be stamped K for 1941 or L for 1942.

Red, thanks for the reply. I wondered about the fenders. They're shaped kind of like shells. I bought the M last Friday for $1500 and drove it 3 miles back to my house. Congrats on your M purchase.
