I have a question on timing the mag on a Regular.
When you set the timing to the flywheel mark, where should you have the advance lever set-fully
retarded, fully advanced or somewhere in between?
the manual says to line up the marks on the breaker housing cover, but I cant see any marks on
any of the mags I have. I have it set now with the lever fully retarded, impulse pawl disengaged,
flywheel mark centered in the inspection hole as the points are just starting to open. I think it is retarded too much with the impulse working because
it won't start unless I spin the crank fast. It feels like it fires past full compression. I don't like having to spin the crank to start it.
I believe that if it is set correctly it should start by just pulling up on the crank. Can someone
give me a hard and fast procedure or am I stuck with trial and error? I am a little afraid of advancing it too far and having it kick back. My F-12 starts real well, but I had to do it by trial and error.

I time my F-30 like this. Pull all your plugs out, crank engine until #1 piston is on compression stroke. Fully retard your spark. It is nice if someone can turn engine for you. I physically watch #1 piston with a small flashlight; as the piston is coming up slowly your impulse should trip right at top-dead center. If it does not take your cap off your mag. and see where your dist. segment is; it should look like about 2 o'clock. If your tractor will start its got to be somewhere in the ball-park. I would then disengage your pawl on your impulse and at a very little at a time move your segment re-engage and crank your engine again, watch #1 one on comp. stroke and see where impulse trips this time. Note if your timing got better or worse and just keep repeating this until she's firing at TDC. Ido not trust the marks on the flywheel; I find this to work the best for me and I've done a mess of them. Give me a holler if you have any more problems.

Thanks, I read my F-12 and F-30 opp manuals last
night and they both said to fully retard the spark. the Farmall regular manual was unclear on this. I guess as long as it fires after or at TDC
it wont kick back as long as I don't forget to trip the manual impulse coupling pawl. I think the way I have it set now, it fires at TDC without
the the pawl tripped. The impulse coupling retards it even further, so I guess I do have it retarded too far.

It's been a few years, but my memory is the impulse is supposed to kick when you reach the mark. The process you describe is correct for setting timing on a motorcycle.

I don't know the hard and fast rules, but I think you should have the points set advanced, the impulse will provide 30 or 35 deg. retard. I agree with your cranking, I belt two of them together, save on sweat and stress!!!
