I've always used stright 30wt. oil in my MD. I wonder with the advances in oil and etc. if a multi-weight oil is better for this old engine? It uses/leakes oil quite a bit, especially when pulling or using my bushog. Any suggestions?

If you are having good luck I would not change oils. I have ran SAE 30 in my 706 gas with no problems. This spring I changed to 15-40. Bad results .... fouls plugs and drinks oil. I just hope I can get back to where I was. I have drained the 15-40 and put 30 weight back. Just my experience. The 15-40 oils are probably loaded with detergents ... it will clean your engine up .... do you want that???? May reduce oil pressure and compression. Just my thoughts. Some say the 15-40 may be thinner than a straight weight 30 oil???

I use Exxon HDX 30 wt. in both of my MD's. That is the same oil that has been used in them for 50 years and never had a problem. Use the same oil in the injection pump that you use in the crankcase.

I have been using 10w-40(usually .50 to .75
a quart when on sale) in both of mine
for like 10 years, works fine. I think
any leaks that you have are due to bad gaskets/oil seals. If you are burning oil,
that is just bad oil rings. In most cases,
its easier to just buy more oil, until you
have time to fix it.

I'm using Rotella T 15W-40 in my MD. Works fine, no leak problems and good oil pressure. The manual calls for 20 wt oil up to 90 degrees and if over 90 then 30 wt. It rarely gets over 90 where I am, and I figured 15W-40 would be no thinner than 20 wt.

We've always used 15w-40 in all of our Diesels. That and frequent oil changes increases the life of the engines.

I use 20W50 with good results especially in the oil burners. I buy it in 5 gal containers and pump it into quarts with a pail pump.

Ike, I'm no expert on oil but if she's using and leaking why spend the extra for multi-weight which will probably still leak as much and won't appreciably change the rate of "Using" that you describe. If she's had 30W in it with no problems, I wouldn't change now.//FB
