Just bought a Super C that has set for several months. Was able to get it running quite easily and the motor sounds great. The problem is the engine is running wide open. The linkage is hooked to the governor and works but the governor holds it wide open. Is there something in the governor that can stick or in other words is there a quick fix to try? Can I unbolt the cover to this assembly and look inside it easily? As you can tell the one thing I am unfamiliar with is the governor assembly. I have driven the tractor in high gear and tapped on the assembly but nothing helps. I also don't want to create a worse problem. I just want to get it home!

My friend and I had the exact problem with his C. It sat for about 5-7 years because the throttle was acting up. When we got her running the engine would race and I'd to jump off the tractor as fast as I could at pull the carb linkage back.

The owner thought it might be the spring, so I yanked the governor housing off. Out falls pieces of what used to be the thrust bearing (~$13). Next, we changed the spring, which I'm not sure was necessary. Finally, somehow the linkage from the governor to the carb was way out of adjustment. With the engine off and the pin removed from the clevis end, the holes in the rockshaft and the clevis should line up or maybe be a turn longer.

It probably took me 2 hours total to do all this. Changing that spring was a pain. When you remove the five or six bolts holding the housing on, you'll need to wiggle it around to get it past the fan, but whatever you do, don't let the governor fall out of engine or you'll have to retime.

Twice now I have seen a reference to governors and engine timing - help me out of ignorance and please explain the connection between the two?

The distributor has a keyed gear that fits into the backside of the drive gear on the governor. The drive gear is, I believe driven by an idler which is driven by the crankshaft. On a Cub, the governor is pressed into the housing so you'll always lose the timing. On a C the housing just covers the gov, so as long it doesn't fall out of the engine you'll won't have to retime.

Pretty much everything in a Farmall is easy enough to figure out just by looking at it. Don't be afraid to open up the govenor and poke around. Probably just something stuck in there or the carb.
