I redid my 45 B a couple of years back, it only sees action in the local parades and an occasional trip to the grocery store(yes it really makes people talk!). Lately it wants to foul all the plugs with really black soot. It has good compression, carb has been rebuilt and it seems to shot a blue spark across the plugs. I did not redo the magneto, could the problem be in there? Any feedback that ya'll can give me is welcome. Stillcrazy near Indy

Another thing to look for is anything blocking the intake. I once had a mud wasp nest restricting air flow on my 4010 JD. They can get in through a pretty small opening.

My B was doing the same thing. Turns out it was the air intake cap at the top of the filter pipe.. it was pushed all the way down and choking the engine. Lots of black soot. moved the cap higher, and it runs like a new one.

It probably just needs hotter plugs. The modern gas you get these days seems to need hot plugs to burn right and if you don't make the tractor work hard (and I mean like pulling a plow all day) and get good and hot, the plugs foul pretty quickly. Champion D-15's were the original specification, most folks I know use D-18's or D-21's with good results. Other manufacturers make plugs with equivilant heat ranges, I just don't remember those numbers offhand. A good parts house can cross-reference to any brand you like.

I am running d-21's, but the breather tube may be the thing. It just seems that it doesn't get enough air. I will try that this weekend. thanks stillcrazy
