Hey all, I am thinking of taking a Intl. 340 Utility off of my neighbor's hands. It has a loader on it which is what I am looking at it primarily for. He was stating that the clutch in the torque amatic (excuse lack of knowledge on subject) is the only problem. Can anyone shed some light on this? Any help would be welcomed. Is this a pretty good tractor?

Chris:

I don't know about a 340 Utility, but on my 300 Utility the torque amplifier is basically a manually operated underdrive unit. It gives a lower gear corresponding to each "regular" gear, including reverse. When engaged, it also acts as an overrunning clutch or sprag-type mechanism that allows the tractor to "freewheel" so the engine will not brake the tractor. (Careful!)

The tractor drives just fine without the T.A. (just leave it disengaged). Of course, you won't get the benefit of the increased torque at the rear wheels, but that may not be important for what you want to do with the tractor.

Every manual I've seen dictates a tractor split in order to fix the T.A. You can draw your own conclusions about difficulty and expense.

The T.A. is one of two Achilles' heels on the 300 Utility; the other one is the underdesigned steering box. There are some upgrades available to beef up the T.A. One involves oversized balls for the ramps, and the other involves replacing the assembly with a sprag mechanism. You can check the archives on this site to find out more about these options.

The T.A. on my tractor--and most likely on yours--is entirely mechanical; no hydraulics.

I hope this helps!

Chris
As Farmall 43 said, the TA is expensive and usually devalues the tractor by $1000 to $1500.
A word of caution about worn out TA's - A farmer friend of mine has a 806 with a worn TA that slips everytime the clutch is engaged. While operating the tractor, if you disengage the clutch and re-engage, the tractor will delay moving until the hydraulic pressure closes the clutch packs on the TA or the clutch pack quits slipping. It is a dangerous way to operate a tractor that is about ready to become immobile.

Chris a number of things to look at. Does it have power steering? If not it will be a bear under a load. Does the loader mount on the rear axle? If not it is putting a lot of wheight on the bell houseing and that occassionally causes stress cracks. As for the T/A (Torque Amplifier) it may simply be out of adjustment but that almost never causes it to stop working. Usually that means at least $800 min. to reapair or replace. I don't have the IT manual right here with me but I am pretty sure you still have to split the tractor to do the T/A clutch and ramp and rollers. I have a 340 standard and it is a nice tractor. The brakes wear out to fast but it is a powerful little tractor. best of luck and read on. I am sure you will recieve many responses. Farmall43
