Replace engine on 444 or buy something new?

My oil pump went on my IH 444 diesel tractor, and
it looks like the bearings, crankshaft, etc. are
locked up. Should I replace the engine (new or used?) or look for another tractor? Finances are
a concern.

Thanks.

I looked in Value-built's catalog and see a 444 gas engine rebuilt block that includes everything but a head for $1699. Their diesel blocks are about $500-$600 more. However, I did not see a 444 diesel block listed. You'll have to call and check. 888-828-3276. You get a couple hundered off with an exchange.

Ann You did not mention it but there is the possibility that your present engine may be rebuildable/repaired

My tractor mechanic said it is rebuildable, but
he didn't recommend it. Thought it would be more
expensive than replacing because of the damage.

Ann: I know the 444 to be a good tractor but do not know the condition of yours and how much of the work will be done at home or by a shop, etc., all these things come into play. Might I suggest that you call a Dealer or shop you work with and get an estimate to have a new or used engine installed. That would give you something to compare prices to something new. You may also consider calling around salvage yards and pricing used or rebuilt engines. Hope this helps.
