I was wondering if I need to change the ignition switch on my Farmall SM to a 12v one once the I change the system over to 12v. Im getting many answers on this from yes to no. Anyone know for sure? I personally would be more concerned about the change in Amperage more than voltage on that switch. Would I also half to drop the voltage to the gauges with resistors? Thx.

Instead of the resistor route, simply change the coil to a 12V. You will be glad you did. Replace the bulbs, you can get them at any auto parts store for under a buck.

BD, The other thing you'll need to change is the
lights. You'll need to either replace the lamps
or get whole new light assemblies for the
headlights. The gagues may be lighted too, so
don't forget to check them for lamps too. (I'm
not sure about the gagues being lighted, but check
anyway, it couldn't hurt).

Good luck,
Phil

Your existing ign switch will work fine on 12 v. The ammeter will work on 12 v too, though you'll need to reverse the connections on it if you change to 12 volt neg ground. SM Oil and water temp gages are mechanical - they're independent from the electrical system.

Your switch that is 6V will work just fine on a 12V system. I never change them out when doing a conversion.
