I just finished rebuilding the trans on my 400 and am getting ready to refill. My question is does Hy-tran fluid mix with water over time or do they stay seperate. Last year my whole trans was a block of ice because the water (I know there shouldn't be any water)mixed with the oil. Seams to me the gears stir up the water into the oil. Will the same happen when I refill with hy-trans?

Sven,

They do mix well. When HyTran turns color from the normal yellowish color to white like milk, this means it has a significant water content. Just periodically check the fluid for the white color to tell if it is getting contaminated. It can tolerate quite a bit of water but this dilution will cause more wear. Most water comes into the trans from condensation. Tractors that spend their lives outside in the winter are especially prone to this. Good luck.

Yes, Hy-tran will mix with water, and not seperate, at least not as fast as other hydraulic-transmission oils. That was one of their selling points, the water would not set at the bottom and freeze up in the oil pickup tube. Dealer told dad when he bought his 350 that it should be changed every year or so, mosly because of the moisture buildup. Better for the TA also. Water seems to get in those transmissions around the gearshift levers. I don't know if a person can make a rubber skirt to keep it out or not.

That's what I thought. But, considering the cost to replace 15 gal of the stuff every year wouldn't it make sense to use oil that seperates from water and just be careful to drain water out at bottom? There's not much I can do about condensation inside tranny.
