The 1/4" tube that goes from one side of the head to the other, over the rocker arm. Mine has a hole towards the end of motor. It doesn't look it was drilled but more like its been filed or groung . Is it supposed to be there and if it is what is its function, since the rocker arm is getting a good dose already? Also how do I know if my valve guides need replacing?

I'm working on a W4 engine and it has the same tube and today I called the IH dealer and was told that is a breather tube. I called cause of the hole so I guess they all have it. Did you rebuild the engine or at least have the head off? I found a copper "O"ring in the headgasket kit (after I had the head torqued down) and I don't know what it is. Do you?

One sign of valve guide wear is the engine smoking when you crank it but goes away real soon.

That tub goes to the air cleaner and the hole should be there to help burn the gases in crank case. And on top of head
