I have a '54 Cub that I use mostly for mowing and snow removal. The other day I was out cutting heavy grass when the PTO disengaged with an quick grinding. I can get it to engage, but only for a short while, then it pops out again. I checked the archive of this discussion group and found only one reference that applied, and the advice was that it should be easy to fix, but that one needed to remove the PTO cover and "get parts" from a dealer...not very helpful. Can anyone out there give me a starting point for this problem? I have the service and owners manuals for this tractor, but there is barely any mention of the PTO, let alone service and repair. Thanks in advance!!

I had a problem like this when I first took over my Dad's old '58 Cub. The bearing was shot in the power take off, it was so bad the pulley wouldn't stay on the shaft and some dumb shade tree mechanic tack welded it to the shaft. I had to replace the shaft, bearing, and pulley, and since it had been operated so long like that the shaft from the transmission was worn too. I had to machine a bushing out of bronze, similar to the pilot bushing in a crankshaft to take out the slack so it was easier to engage. It's been working for about 5 years now with no problem.
