one thing a lot of people over look is to make sure you get all the gear lash taken up before you set timing. If you pull all the plugs out and roll the engine around until you get on the compression stroke on #1 cyl, and then go VERY slowly until you have the timing mark lined up it should be ok. If you roll the engine backwards to go back to the mark if you pass it up you will be setting the timing a little off because of the play in the timing gears. Before I put on the mag ,if I have had it off, I put my hand on the governor side of the coupler and make sure the slop (if any)is taken up.Then I put in the bolts on the coupler. My tractors are older than an H (I have a 10-20 and an F-12)but I have an idea they hook up simillar.

IT still has a mag.what I did is put a new set of points in it and when I try to start it, it pops like I have got it out of time.

I ran into a similar situation on a farmall A.If the mag on your H is a model H4 (and I believe it is)and you removed the cover that houses the points and happened to accidently turn the rotor, your tractor is out of time! I did this and pulled my hair out trying to figure out what I did until I finally read the manual. You need to time it and it will run just fine.It may take a couple trys. The impulse coupling needs to be just on the verge of tripping on TDC when you install the mag and it takes a little patience to get it right. Have fun!

check if #1 is on compression and if the plug wires are ok there is no setting the timing on a mag it will start on impluse and then when it runs there is like 34 degres advance but to start it is on dead center you CANNOT advance the timing on the stock mag that is original equipment read the manual it is explained in detail

like the other guys say check that the rotor is on #1 when it is on TDC as you might have moved the gears when you put the points in easier to take all plugs out that makes for turning over the engine easierleave the cap off and you will get a feel for how it trips as each cycl goes on compression and make sure it is firing before putting the plugs back in
