Check the clutch.A friend of mine was given a 1 ton Chevy truck that the motor was "locked up" in it.The rest of the truck was junk, but the motor was a 454c.i. big block so he decided to pull it out and scrap the rest. After he dropped the tranny,he noticed the clutch fingers were bent into the holes in the flywheel and hitting a casting line on the back of the block, thus, not allowing the motor to turn over.Took the clutch off,and the engine fired right up!!Don't know if this helps or not, hope so.

If a large enogh piece of a spark plug breaks off in the cylinder, the piston can't "top-out" seeming like a stuck engine. Carefully try to turn the engine backwards at the crank pulley. If it will move backwards even an inch or two, you may have debris in a cylinder. Good luck.

You might try to look inside the clutch housing if it has an inspection plate. I have seen clutch disks disintegrate and throw a chunk into the bell housing locking up the engine. Might be worth a shot.

Jim, sorry if I steered you in the wrong direction. A locked starter is certainly common and could be your source. That's good news and what the heck, she probably needed an oil change anyway. Sorry for the inaccurate diagnosis.

timing gears could be broken, that wouldn't
show up in the oil pan.

If I remember right you rolled it down hill and popped the clutch so I dont think the starter would be the problem. Its possible youve jammed something up in the tranny and thats got it locked up.Have you tired to turn it over with the clutch in?

Red's suggestion to pull the starter is a good idea. I've heard of situations where people pick up a tractor for cheap because the seller thinks the engine is seized, and it turns out that the starter was just stuck. If you get it out and the motor is still stuck, try turning on the front pully carefully with a wrench and listen and watch for any binding.

I think you may have already tryed this but it happened to me with my H. the starter gear got jammed into the fly wheel and I pulled the starter out and turned the engine pulley. put the starter in and VROOOOM!!! I thought I seized the block. Some guys on this site told me to pull the starter.
