What was a "seasonal PTO", on a IH 300 Utility tractor for, and how likely is the shaft to break that switches it from off to on? I know pretty much nothing about tractors so any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Just a big THANK YOU for all of your help. I dropped the cover today and the shaft was broken. Looked as though someone tried (very hard) to engage the PTO without the "clutch" being lined up. I think I got it so I can use it and, if so, I will leave it that way. Phil

we had a 300 with seasonal disconnect. I had to take the small screw out of the lever move the lever past the edge of the lever and use a washer and put the bolt back in it must have gotten bent but it worked like that for years Another way of using the tractor if the pto is not used is to leave it in gear. The whining will stop in gear. maybe easier to start in the winter with seasonal disconnect but with pto spreaders snowblowers, feed mills the pto is need all year longso why disconnect.

I have a follow-up question for you 300U guys. I am considering purchasing one that needs new rear rubber. The owner doesn't know what size, are they 13 X 28 or in that range? Thanks

Tom T, I have the "Ultimate American Farm Tractor Data Book" which indicates that the tires should be rear - 12X28, front - 5.5x16. However I just bought a IH 300 utility and it has 13X28 and 6.5X16 respectively. Phil

The seasonal disconnect on the 300U IPTO was intended to reduce gear wear in the IPTO assembly at the back of the tractor when the PTO wasn't needed for extended periods. It was discontinued somewhere in the middle of the 300U production run (the basically more trouble than it's worth (IMHO) and cost money to include in the tractor (probably IH's reason for dropping it)).

Not really sure which shaft you're referring to, but I'm assuming your PTO isn't working and you're wondering what's wrong with it. The shaft going up to the disconnect is about 1/4" diameter, and isn't likely to be broken unless someone really cranked on it somewhere along the line. If you can't turn the disconnect lever on the bottom of the tractor all the way around (360 degrees) it's unlikely to be your problem.

The most simple explanation for lack of success otherwise is that the disconnect is in the disconnected position, and you're not getting it lined up properly when you're trying to engage it. Never did it myself, but this looks like a two-person job with one guy rotating the PTO shaft slowly (engine off) while the other tries to engage the disconnect during the instants when things are lined up properly. You'd pretty much be working blind on this and it's probably not easy.

If that isn't the problem, perhaps this is: the shaft has a little finger-like cam deal on the end of it which fits into a slot on the part of the shaft which slides back and forth to disconnect the IPTO, and this can pop out of the slot under certain conditions (happened to me a while back). Solution is to drain (change) the transmission fluid, pull the disconnect cover plate off, and see what the problem is. Good idea to replace at least the cover gasket if you end up doing this exploratory surgery.

Good luck - hope this helps.

On my 300 RC, I hammered it pretty good using a roto tiller beating up sod. It bent internally, and had to replace it. (Twisted from the beating, but it never broke. It took a while to figure out the problem, because I had no idea it was a feature of the 300. Finding a replacement wasn't any fun either...

It was for shutting off the pto when not using it for long spells. It saved wear and tear on the live pto...
